P0722 - Output Speed Sensor Circuit No Signal
« on: October 12, 2010, 02:21:24 PM »
So I've recently (during the last couple of weeks) been having issues with my Vitara.

It is a 2003 Vitara, 2.0, auto.

When I go to work in the morning, my Vitara does not want to shift out of first gear initially.  Once it revs up to 5000+ rpm it eventually shifts...  much later than normal.  Once it makes that first shift into 2nd gear, it seems to be fine for the remainder of my drive to work (10 min drive), and usually good for the day.

This has caused the check engine light to come on.  I dug up my code reader this evening, and it read code P0722.  After searching for this code on google, it turns out it means "Output Speed Sensor Circuit No Signal".

Has anyone experienced this before?  I'm wondering if this is a simple unit I can easily swap out myself.  I am no mechanic, but I got some basic tools, and I'm more than willing to give it a shot if this sensor can be easily replaced.

Thanks for any advice or input.

its as simple as a 10mm bolt on the tail of the t-case, the vss sensor is black and has a 3 wire plug on it, after you unplug it  and undo the 10mm bolt, it will just slide out.

now that being said, do to the dual t-case set up in out 2002 xl7, i don't have the vss hooked up at all, and the truck shifts fine...

unless they changed something in 03 that the trans requires vss input to help control its shift points, then you may have other issues....

Thanks for the input.

I'll see if I can pick up the part (for cheap hopefully), and swap it out to see if that solves the issue.  And I'll cross my fingers it isn't something else.

The DTC0722 comes in when the RPM is greater than 3000 for more than 10 seconds and no indication of speed.

Thanks again for the input, but wanted to give an update.

Turns out it's a sensor on the transmission that was causing the issue, not the sensor on the transfer case.  There are three similar sensors, two on the transmission, one on the transfer case.

It was the sensor on the top of the transmission.

That sensor on the transmission is $185 from Suzuki.  That being said it is the same sensor for all Asian-Warner transmissions, and most of them are much cheaper than the Suzuki one.  I am not sure if the 4 speed transmissions use the same speed sensosrs as the 5 speed auto's, but I needed one for mine and this is what I found.
A Toyota speed sensor only $82 at NAPA, and they had next day service.  If yours compares to it, it was much cheaper.
The angle of the mounting bolt is a little different, and I had no issues connecting it up.
