new bumper on my GV
« on: January 20, 2008, 07:50:05 PM »

it's not done yet, need to reinforce behind the sides, intall a reciever, and put some tubing on the top. should look killer when it's done.

it didn't turn out quite how I wanted, but close. It's growing on me, once I do the tubing work it should look a crap ton better.

thanks, I think I'll paint it to match the roof basket which aslo matches my spare tire wheel, or just keep it black. I plan to make all the silver black someday when I get around to it.

I'm not mounting a winch on it, but I am putting a reciever in it. the plan is that if/when I have a winch, I can use it on the front or the rear and keep it inside the vehicle when it's not in use. I don't really want all the extra weight of a winch on the front end unless I need it. the bumper right now probably wieghs a tadd more than the reciever it had for towing it behind a motor home. I also had a brush guard pinned into that, so once I finish it, it won't weigh much more than my previous setup.

Looks like a great piece of fabrication M&M!  Good job.  Clean appearance and the lines matched the body and lift very well.  How many hours did you put into that beast and did you do the welds yourself?

thanks, I don't have any idea how many hours went into it, but it wasn't too bad. It's all one piece of sheet metal that me and a guy who is a metal fabricator for a living mapped out, he did one half, then I did the other after I knew what to do. all the measurements were based off a cardboard template that I made. once I plasma cut the piece, the top 90 degree bend and bottom 45 degree bends were done on some big bender type deal (didn't see that part since my friend sent it there in the middle of the week after I plasma cut it). once that was done, I did some more measurements based off the template and cut out some notches to fold it into shape. I just used an oxy-acetalyne torch to heat and bend it, again, my friend did one of the bends, then I knew what to do and did the rest. There are only 4 seams on the top that I welded together, most of the welding is on the brackets.

I can't wait to finish reinforcing it so I can get crackin on some tube work for it. It will aso be a ton stronger once I do that, and then I can really take advantage of having the bumper without worrying too much about hurting it.

is the bumper steel?  I'd like to build one like that, but I am afraid of adding too much wait for the little 4cyl engine...

sorry I took so long to reply, yes, the bumper is steel. the way I built it, it's not all that heavy, even when I finally finish it, it won't be that much heavier. It's all in how you build your bumper, how heavy it is is up to you, I try to build things so they are as strong as they need to be without being much heavier than they need to be.

thanks, I know what you mean about the matter of time, I've been meaning to do some more work on this bumper for almost a year now. My toyota project took up allot of time that would otherwise go to the zuk, that now has two mostly completed unfinished bumpers.. funny how that works. I did complete a solid axle conversion on that rig though, so I'm not lazy, I just have priorities... The yota project is actually in the background, it doesn't look anything like that anymore.
