HOW TO: Disable DRL Daytime Running Lights 2000 GV
« on: August 22, 2011, 03:21:37 PM »
Ok, I know this has been covered here before and is fairly easy, but after doing a few searches, I only found one pic of the of the correct relay that needed to be disconnected.  I have even found an incorrect method for disconnecting the auto headlights.  Seems that anyone that did explain the process with pics have let their links expire.  This is a mod that you can do to keep your daytime running lights off.  Also, you will need to disconnect the Auto headlight sensor, if you want to keep your lights from coming on at night. This is for DRL's only.  I keep a photobucket account just for my forum pics, so hopefully this thread will be up for easy reference whenever needed.  Thanks goes out to the people who have posted on how to do this, I just wanted to add pics to the process. DO AT YOUR OWN RISK

DISABLING DRL:

It is definitely not necessary to remove this panel, but it really does help to get an idea what you are looking for.  There are three screws at the bottom of the panel (marked by red arrows).  Remove them and 'pop' out the top clips.

In the next pic, looking through under the steering column, you will see the two controllers (thanks fordem) labeled A and B.  You may not have B.  The relay you will want to unplug is the silver one marked A.  I saw someone write that A can also be black and not silver.  I read someone write to unplug B to disable auto headlights, but that is incorrect.  B is for your electric door locks.  With B disconnected, you can "lock" your doors, as in beeping the horn and flashing the lights, but the locks will not actuate.  Ask me how I know ::)

Here is what it will look like if you do not remove the panel and lay on the floor and look up.

Again, I got my info from this forum, I just wanted to put the process in a neat bundle for the next guy.  Hope this helps.

Just so that you are aware of it - the items labelled A & B in the pictures are not relays - they are better described as "controllers".

Glad this has helped others.  I love being able to choose when to have my lights on, plus I am adding months or more to my silver star heaslights.

I'm a little confused.  I have an 03 tracker.  Last night I found the metal box and removed the plug.  I then started up the tracker, took off the e-brake/put it in gear, and the DRLs came on anyway.  Does my particular year have an exception to this rule?

No you just need to disable your auto headlights. There is a link to do that in the original post.

What you need to determine is whether you are looking at DRLs (headlights only) or auto lights (headlights & park/side lights) - two different things controlled by two different circuits.

I see.  I didn't think that I had the auto headlights, but I'll check the dash and follow the instructions provided.  Thanks again for sharing a great tip.

I didnt think I had them either.  I was confused when I unplugged the drl controller and my lights came on.  I was doing the mod at night too! Luckily the next day I found a drl thread that mentioned the auto headlight.  Thats why I made two threads.  Maybe I should make just one combined thread.

Did this last night, everything worked fine. Only thing I noticed now, is after I unplugged the DRL module/controller, my interior lights don't come on when opening the doors. Anyone else notice this side effect?

Andy. Someone had that issue before. I am thinking you may need a jumper. Mine works just fine.

Perry. Your autos will work as long as you dont unhook the sensor located on the passenger side dash.
