Ecm problems
« on: September 19, 2010, 09:21:47 AM »
Hello,

I have a 99 vitara Not a grand 4x4 auto and the trans wont shift out of 2nd so we swapped the trans, checked all the solenoids and replaced the cable and still doing the same thing, when we pull it up on a scanner we get no trans info but engine info.

my question is does this sound like an ecm problem, we pulled the ecm and inspected it and it seems fine, I can source one locally for $100 but I dont know what numbers on the ecm are the ones that I need to match up.

here is my ecm

30024580
33920-65D3 3
065D3 AD  9217   c
E6T1117H3 ZC
              1057

this is how it looks on my tag

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks
pat

The ECU on your vehicle also controls the transmission - so yes, it is a possible cause - the 33920-65D33 is the part number you need to match.

Have you checked the wiring between the ECU and the transmission for continuity (disconnect the ECU first please)?

Thanks for the feedback, my mechanic is stumped with this one, I am not sure if he checked it for continuity or not, is it easy enough for me to try? I am not real electrical savy.

Basically you're checking the wiring that connects the ECU to the transmission solenoids with an ohm meter to make sure there are no broken wires.

Look closely - I'm asking about the wiring between the ECU and the solenoids - NOT the solenoids themselves.

Your mechanic could have verified that the solenoids were functional at the transmission side of the connection - a broken wire between the ECU and the transmission would cause the solenoid not to activate when instructed to by the ECU, or the ECU could be defective and not activating the solenoid.

On the other hand - if what you are telling me is that the solenoids activate when they should - then that would suggest the ECU is fine and the problem lies in the transmission itself.

Check the trans "kick-down" cable btwn the throttle linkage and trans. IF seized, it will not retract and raise hell w/your shifting cycle.  ;)

yea we replaced that also, anyway it was the computer. I found one out of a 99 tracker 4dr that worked perfect for $50, I kick myself for not going with my gut feeling in the first place, it would have saved me about $600 but hey I only have $1200 into a 99 4x4 with 90k and rust free so I should'nt complain. now its time to lift it up ;D
