Has anyone done it?

How hard would you think it would be?
I know other people have done it with other vehicles how about a 99+

I would be interested, and do not think it would be difficult.  However, it is probably not required with the amount of weight transfer when hard braking.  I have noticed that a lot of the Dakar Rally SUV's retain their rear drums, and this is proof that it is not really required.

Another thing, you will get easily twice the amount of miles between brake rebuilds.

I agree with binkie.  39,000 miles and my front pads are less than 20%.  The rears are over 70%.

Well that depends on what kind of driving you are doing. When you get a little sand or mud in the drums it really speeds up the wearing of the shoes and drum. I found that everytime I went offroading in the mud, the mud really caked in there and I had wash everything out often. The disks are self cleaning, as you spin them (normal driving) the dirt and mud is thrown away due to centrifigal (sp) force. I have changed the shoes on my XJ many times in the first 2 years I owned it. 3 time in two years. I upgraded to disks and I have yet to replace any thing in the past 2 years. I also think the pads are cheaper than the shoes.
