Front locking hubs for 2002 Escudo
« on: July 31, 2012, 11:15:24 AM »
WARN only certifies their front locking hubs for up to 2001 Escudo/Vitara.  Anyone know if they're OK for 2002?  What's the difference between 2001 and 2002?

A word of caution - asking the wrong question can get you all sorts of incorrect information.

A 2002 Escudo would be an SQ series chassis, similar to a Vitara/Grand Vitara or a Tracker, but if what you have is a 2002 Grand Escudo, that's a JA series chassis, equivalent to an XL-7, and there are some differences.

Isn't the front suspension the same on the XL7?  Every part I've ever seen for it specs the same Tracker/Vitara/Escudo/GV/GE/XL7 except for the springs?

There are differences in the front axle freewheel mechanisms between the JA & SQ series - I don't know all of them, but I know that they exist - I believe that the freewheel hubs that the OP asked about will interchange, but I'm not 100% certain.

I know members on here have put manual hubs on XL7's before.

We are talking all 99-05 body style here, right?

A valid point.

There's really only one way - bolt it on yourself - do be aware however, that, your Escudo (or Grand Escudo) most likely has a pneumatic freewheel clutch built in to the front differential, so the only advantage of bolting on freewheel hubs is reduced wear on the CV joints - since the driveline has already been disconnected there is no significant gain in fuel efficiency (if that's what you're looking for).

The point I was trying to make earlier was that few of us are familiar with the Escudos & Grand Escudos, and whilst we may be able to tell you what works on a Vitara or Grand Vitara, unless we know what your vehicle is equivalent to (and we still don't, because you've asked about an Escudo, and your avatar suggests you have a Grand Escudo), the answers we can provide may not be applicable.

These forums contain a truly amazing amount of collective knowledge, much of it gained from one individual or another, attempting to do something - like in your case, fitting free-wheeling front hubs to an Escudo - by someone looking at a part and thinking "this looks like it should fit" - the disconnect in this case comes from the fact that you are introducing a new and unknown quantity - an Escudo, which as I have said few of us will have seen.

It's also worth pointing out that there are quite a few JDM Escudos & Grand Escudos that have been exported as used cars and there ARE what I will describe as undocumented differences between the JDM models & the export models, which can make the job of finding out what fits your car truly a matter of trying it yourself.

Good luck.
