Front brake pads?
« on: February 03, 2006, 07:20:32 PM »
What have you guys used to get rid of the crappy OEM front disc brake pads?  I get all kinds of dust, they make horrible noises when they suck in moisture, and they're wearing kinda fast.  I know it's because of the crappy materials the government makes OEM's use now.  So what brands/compositions of pads have you guys used?

my brakes make a chirp as I am driving around, I checked the wear on front and rear and it's fine, I don't think it's dust in them because it never stops.. even after I tried brake cleaner
anyone know what's going on here?

Is it humid when it does this?

All summer long ours made a nice...interesting...metallic noise at the end of every stop.  As soon as the temperatures got down from 80-90 degrees and the humidity levels went below 80% in the fall the noise went away.  Some brake pads absorb moisture and cause things like this to happen.  Result of the crappy materials the OEM's have to use now.

yea, mine didn't ever do it before and I've had it for over a year now. just started this winter actually.. I can't figure out what it is. even though it's not the humid summer right now it could possibly be moisture.. they also squeak like mad when I stop after backing out of my driveway in the morning when the breakes are really cold.. that's probably normalish though.. always has done that I think. yea, I am thinking about replacing my brake pads but they aren't worn out looking.. it could just be the crappy materials in the pad or something all of a sudden enhancing thier crappyness

well, do you think that new brake pads wouldn't do this?

More than likely they would fix the problem.  They should be the only thing capable of making that noise.

You mean the rotors?

I wouldn't unless you had funny wear or they were too thin.

I just asked the dude at napa about the squeaking and now I'm thinking my rotor could be developing a slight warp.. not sure

When you hit the brakes do you feel a pulse.  If so your rotors might be warped.

I feel no pulse which makes me think that the rotors aren't warped. he also said it could be a wheel bearing. I think the squeaking is getting rid of itself so it may have just been a piece of cinder in the pad or something.. who knows

that guy at napa is normally quite a douche bag though and a freaking know it all so I don't usually take what he says too seriously

you know how that is, one time I asked for bolts to pry my rusted on brake drums off and he said "isn't it a datsun" I have no idea why he assumed that, at lest I got actual metric thread instead of the one that happened to work that I showed him which was non-metric.. I had to use two different sockets though because he was a fool and got two different head sizes.. what a goon
