Test drove a 99 V6 5spd with a couple issues.
« on: November 07, 2010, 06:52:30 PM »
So I test drove a 99 GV 5spd with 115k miles on it yesterday.  It had a couple codes on it, I forgot the code numbers but it was essentially 2 CKT errors, one on each bank.  Are these expensive or difficult to replace?  There are two different kinds I've found, which ones would I need for this?  http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/details/QQSuzukiQQGrand_VitaraQQStandardQQCrankshaft_Position_SensorQQ19992005QQSIPC255.html

Also, there was some ticking noise from the engine, I understand this is usually the timing chain and tensioners.  I've read mixed things that somethings changing in good oil and OEM Suzuki oil filter can resolve this, otherwise it is a very expensive and/or time consuming fix.  Should I beware of this?  It was pretty loud with the hood up, but I can't say it was super load from in the cabin with hood closed.

What do you guys think?  Otherwise it is pretty clean, no rust and no leaks underneath.  The price is $2800.

Thanks,
-Chad

The ticking could just be a valve lifter, which a flush and fresh 5W30 and new filter should sort out.  BUT, no guarantee, and if it's worn chain tensioners, a chain could break.  Suzuki say a little rattle at startup is fine, but it should stop after a short period.

Walk away. If the seller can't fix / correct the codes AND it's noisy...you are taking a hell of a chance. There are other GOOD rides out there.  ;)

BTW, your link shows both a Camshaft AND a Crankshaft position sensor. They are two different critters.

Are there two crankshaft sensors on the V6?  I recall the OBDII reader saying CKT bank 1 of 2 and bank 2 of 2.

Novadon, normally I'd agree but I've been looking for around a month and can't find any clean 2nd gens for this price, and definately can't find any other V6 5spds unless they are newer and 2x the price.

IanL, yeah it is a gamble, I guess I could do the PVC pipe test to try and determine where the sound is coming from.

My thinking was to offer a bit lower, maybe $2400, and if changing out sensors and oil change/filter works I get lucky, if not I buy a FSM and order a bunch of parts and replace everything...

No. One CRANK and one CAM shaft sensor. You pictured each of them.

That SOUNDS more like the often prevalent 02 sensor code readout. Without the code numbers, can't tell for sure though.

Could you test drive again and scan for the exact codes?  :)

Does the current owner have what appears to be accurate (historical) maintenance records? Proper oil change frequency is a MUST on these engines. With care, they'll last nearly forever. Mine has 245K miles and is still quiet.

Look under the oil fill cap. Is it squeaky clean inside the engine from what you can see? Pull the dipstick. Is the oil clean and translucent?

With the noise you are hearing, there is absolutely no way to tell what needs repair.  :-X
Assuming that it is tensioner or chain related...just replacing a tensioner (with the amount of interference there is to remove) will set you back hundreds of dollars. And that's just a tip of the iceberg if you need chains, sprockets, etc. That could run up to $2K! If the chain jumps...replacement engine time.

Well, as luck would have it another gv v6 5 spd was just posted for sale today and the owner works nearby, I'm going to look at it tomorrow, looks much cleaner from pics.  I'll know a bit more what to look for this time.

Thanks.
