bike racks!?
« on: May 23, 2009, 09:58:22 AM »
what kind of bike rack do you guys run?? i would like something that goes on the rear, seems easiest. but the spare tire is kinda off center so the tire carrier type bike rack may make the bike stick out too far to one side... make the trailer hitch type? i dunno, need opinions...

there are two ways you can Go....

Roof Rack Bike rack or Trailer Hitch Bike Rack

getting your bike on the roof is very hard and annoying.

I suggest a trailer hitch bike rack as you can remove it when you dont need it.....I suggest getting a class 1 hitch with the bike rack attachment(for however many bikes you wish to load) .......

All depends on what your willing to spend as well. my suggestion is costly the hitch and the bike rack will run you about 300 dollars......

I use a hitch bike rack....the bike rack has a ball so I can still tow my trailer while carrying bikes....very convenient

The one I use hooks over the spare and has two support straps that hook into the top of the rear door and a couple more for the bottom of the door. When you load bikes onto it the weight torques downward onto the outside of the spare and keeps it seated.  Once mounted, it stays there.  I can easily carry three full size bikes with the one I have.  I don't remember the brand, but I have used it for about 10 years.  It worked on my 1st gen and my 2nd gen Trackers/kicks.  It doesn't screw up my abily to use my rear view mirrors because the bikes ride below the top of the spare.  Keeps the trailer hitch free and it's easier to load than screwing around with the roof mount models.  You can also chain them into your spare tire to make it more of a pain in the ass for someone attempting to five finger them.   Make them work for it dammit!!! We had to in order to buy them!!

well the weight on the spare i dont think will be a issue, ill have a max of 2 bikes, and the straps would help offset the weight.trailer hitch racks,i just have something against them, like too much junk on the back or somethin haha...

roof rack just too much trouble... i guess its offset spare for me

in the end its your personal decision....checking out the spare tire racks and they are not bad....as long as it hold a bike its doing its job...............and yeah a chain so ppl dont five finger them is definatly needed I did it from day one...heck I even lock my trailer hitch ball into place
