Can't figure out clunk in steering...

Left hand side clunk at low speeds when turning from lock to lock (like backing out of a parking spot)

Silly me... I did the good ole check and jacked up the wheel to look for play in the tierod end and ball joint and it seemed tight.
So I decided to replace the left hand CV half shaft and crap... its still there...

Any suggestions?

Is it a hammering clunk, IE; clunk, clunk, clunk, or does it clunk once?

Once and it's probably the rack & pinion.

My swaybar is removed... I do have a lift

as per the R&P, you would then mean the tie-rod linkage then?

I was thinking maybe I should just crank down hard on the ball joint and strut/steering knuckle bolts as well.

A partially seized steering shaft "U" joint will cause noise too. Oil it and see if the sound persists.  ;)

That would make sence!

I'll have to give that a go with some Marine lube

I saw posted on this forum in a different thread that on a full lock steer that part of the firewall can buckle in and out like a single clunk for locked and another when turning out of it. Kinda like a pop can dent thing. We all know that these things aren't made like a '66 Dodge pickup but that's part of why we like them! Light, good on gas, loads of personality and can just about climb a tree. Everything's a trade off. I'm glad my '99 2.0 auto convert doesn't leave trenches in the pavement and empy my wallet to fill it!

after reffing on componants... I determined that the clunk is from the inner Tie-rod...

which again only manifests itself from full lock to lock - i.e. parking lot etc...

The outside tie rods are in great shape, as are my ball joints (& now my CVs :P)

Problem is... no part listing for inner tie rod, so does this mean I have to shell out $550 CAD for a new rack?

I still think I have plenty of life left on the rack, but maybe I should replace it just for the heckov it.

The tie rod ends attached to the rack are listed in the Suzuki EPC.

Items 10 and 11.

Also shown is the tie rod on the rack side, Item 2, but not on the pinion side.  



However, the quantity shown, if I suppress the drawing, is two, so they are identical left and right.

I replaced the inner and outer tie rod ends last spring on my 99 Tracker. The parts came from Rock Auto and only took me an hour to do. Make sure you do not damage the boots on the rack. Aftermarket if you can find them are crap and the factory ones are real expensive. After the alignment it steered like new and was quiet. I believe the tie rod ends were made by Raybestos.
