When I hit a bump in my 2005 GV, the door ajar light flashes.  Sometimes the light flashes long enough to turn the interior lights on.  All of the doors seem to be tight. and I cannot make the light flash in the garage.  Any ideas?

First a question - do you have an aftermarket alarm system fitted?

Some alarm systems have (or used to have) trembler switches fitted to detect jacking, and if these are wired to the door switches, then will cause the symptoms you describe.

Other than that I would suggest you check the tail gate - grab the bottom edge of the door where the switch is and try to pull it outwards - can you get the light to flash?

The tail gate differs from the other doors in how the latch is adjusted - the four side doors adjust by moving the striker plate on the body, but the tail gate striker doesn't adjust - that circular buffer you see is the adjustment, and it can be set in such a manner that the door appears tight and does not rattle, but is far enough back that the light switch is just not making contact.

My '02 Tracker doesn't have a "Door Ajar Light" that I know of.  However, right after I got it, I noticed that every time I leaned on the driver door armrest, the dome light would come on.  It turned out being the three (I think) screws holding the latch mechanism on the driver's door were so loose that the whole thing could wiggle around.  I tightened them up nice and snug, and it's never done it since (two years later).

Otherwise, it could be a wiring thing, and those are no fun to diagnose . . .

I would start disconnecting the switches one at a time and drive around. When it stops doing it you have found the culprit. They are easy to dissconnect. In the doorframe there is a black button that is held in my a phillips screw. Just unplug it. The interior light wont work but if the dash indicator does not light up then you know where to look.

Thanks for the help.  It seems to be the tailgate.  Attempted to adjust the closure fit.  Not to successful.  Then put a piece of foam on the door where it hits tie switch, and the problem seems to be solved.  I initially suspected the rear door, because I was rear ended last spring.  Thanks again for the help.

You can also adjust the latch so the door closes further - the part on the body of the car has adjustment in it.  Of course, foam works too.

Tracker must be different from the GV - because - as I mentioned earlier, the tailgate striker on my GV is non adjustable.

Guess it must be different.  The piece in the attached picture is adjustable on mine.

I'm out for a few days - I'll get you a picture of mine when I get back - but on my GV, that striker has no more than perhaps 1/16" movement.

I have the same issue on my Vitara...  just realized it's due to the sensor in the driver's door.  If I pull the door handle while I'm in the vehicle, the light goes off (as in the dome light).

I'm going to do a super cheap/easy fix, and stick a piece of rubber or something to the door, where it contacts the sensor.
