Proper locker operation!?!
« on: November 04, 2011, 12:56:37 PM »
I know this topic could go in the general forum, but I thought I'd ask you guys first.

I just bought a  used rear third member complete with a lockright locker. Years ago I had a locker in my Sammy so I'm not  completely new to all the weirdness of lockers in a DD situation. That said, I don't remember the locker in my Sammy acting like this one does.

It seems like it pulls to one side after shifting which is odd. And worst of all It does this really bad clunking thing if I let off the gas while in a corner. The clunking is pretty brutal, shakes the whole vehicle. If I drive it very gingerly i can avoid the clunking but it sure is annoying when it happens.

Are these symptoms part of normal locker operation that I somehow didn't notice int samurai or is there something else going on?? The guy I bought it off said his buddy installed the locker. The one in my Sammy was installed by a pro. There's a difference right there, could it be that my current locker was set up incorrectly? Help me out, i mostly just want some peace of mind that my axles aren't going to explode.  ???

Take a look at the note at the very bottom of the page...

i wonder if what i'm experiencing is a result of worn sidegears causing poor engagement???  ???

Mine feels like it 'pulls' slightly as you accelerate but this is just the rear end torquing trying to push the front end in turns.   Does your locker audibly ratchet around most corners?    I think worn side gears are fairly evident over a set of gears not severely worn.  But then you stated these gears were already set-up when you received them?

The 'clunking' is normal especially if you accelerate through turns.  The axles will bind until one of the side gears slips to release the pressure.  I went through a McDees drive-thru about a week ago just as one of my axles unloaded.  Made a hell of a loud noise!   You should get far less axle bind if you don't stand on the gas when turning corners on hard ball.  If your axles aren't locked they should be almost free wheeling and the ratcheting sound is proof of it during turns.

Yeah, I bought the locker as a complete third. Just dropped it my axle and off i went.

Glad to hear that some binding is normal. That's definitely how it'd describe it; when its binding (clunking) it shakes the whole body and through the shifter i can feel the driveline lurching. I'm getting better at avoiding it. Driving through corners is best done in neutral or with a small amount of throttle. Coasting and de-acceleration in slow corners seems to almost always cause to bind up.

Yeah, I've noticed a light throttle while turning still allows the lock right to ratchet.  Give it a little more though and I can easily get the tires squalling!  You'd think I had a small block chevy in it instead of a 2 liter.
