99 - 2005 All the same?
« on: October 09, 2008, 05:19:13 PM »
So a 99 - 05 vitara/grand vitara /Chevy tracker are all the same ? And they can basically be lifted (body and suspension) the same way as a 90-98 tracker or side kick ....is this true? And are there any years or engines or models to avoid oe to look for? I want to upgarde from my 95 2 dr to a 4 dr and I'm going to do the body/suspension lift and some tires .Anyone got some pics of thiers done up?.....I'm going to search for some now.
Thanks!
Some of the dumbest people I know seem to know everything.........Funny about that!

Their not all the same... The GV has a 2.5L V6 with alot of plastic trim.  Vitara/Trackers are 2.0L 4 bangers and are susceptible to timing chain cover leaks (dont know if the GV suffers the same thing?).  The Tracker have 15" rims and smaller front disk brakes compared to its Suzuki counterparts with 16" rims stock. The 2nd gens have rack and pinion steering and are heavier.. but other than that can be lifted the same way.. check the top sticky for pics!

Is it just the rotor that is smaller on the Tracker or is it the hubs, callipers and rotors? and are the parts interchangeable between the GV and the Tracker as I have a 1999 GV with 16" and I want to put 15"s on it, so can I take out my 16" GV rotor and replace it with a 15" Tracker rotor?

I haven't done it myself, but I have heard a rumor that you can fit 15" wheels over the GV brakes using wheel spacers.

Lucky me then. My 2004 Tracker LT accidentaly got a 2.5ltr 165hp V6 lol. And except for the lack of wheel arch moldings it is the splitting image of a GV. Leather interior, armrests and all  ;).

It has 15" rims. The front rotors are different/smaller than the GV's but will swap out but 15" from a 1st gen Trackick wont fit the front of my 2nd gen Tracker  ???. The inside of these factory 15" rims seem to be cut deep. It's hard to find after market 15" rims for it. Weird.

And I tried putting the rims from my "97 Tracker on my "00 Tracker. They hit the calipers that's how I know that my front calipers are bigger than the first gen but some how smaller than a Vitara. Weird.....

A "97 1.6, a "00 2.0, and a "04 High Flow 165hp 2.5. Can you tell I like Trackers?..... lol.

I figured the calipers were interchangeable between the second gens, but didn't know the trackers had funky rims..    It would be cool if we could  get a little list going  of rims (aftermarket or from other vehicles) that fit our zuks!

So I'm looking at a 2001 SUZUKI GRAND VITARA, 2.5 V6,  4X4,  5 SPEED,  I can put spring spacers and a 3" square tubing body lift to run bigger tires ( how big?)without too many mods to the steering and brake lines? What kind of performance/reliability and fuel mileage can I expect form the V6 ?Any other info on this model would be appreciated .This model still has a tranfer case doesn't it ?can I put locking hubs on it?.....Lots of Questions sorry!
Thanks!

Over 3" on the body lift should have a steering shaft extention.
Stay on top of your oil changes and use quality oil and your motor should live a LOOONG time.
Yes it does have a 2speed mated transfer case. There are lower Tcase gears available.
The locking hubs from a 1st gen TracKick will bolt right on. If you want to do away with the shit on the fly , oops i meant shift on the fly all together you can use the front third member from a 1st gen TracKick.

I'm running 29" tires on mine with just an OME suspension lift kit (1.25-2" Lift)

But I think you'd be struggling to go bigger than 31" even with your planned lift. The rear wheel arches are really small front to back.

Important thing to know: transfer case gears are not compatible with V6 5-speed Grand Vitaras, Trackers, or XL-7's. If it's an V6 automatic it will work and if it is a 5 speed 2.0L 4 banger it will work from 1999-2001.
