2nd battery/cb location
« on: June 13, 2006, 05:37:23 PM »
I have 2 questions:

- has anyone installed a second battery on their 4 dr. Vitara/Tracker.  Mine is a 2000 4 dr with ABS.  The drivers side (left) in front of the firewall would have been great but the ABS unit takes the space.  Thought about under the cargo area (right side) opposite to muffler.  There appears to be some room for an Optima or similar unit.  Comments please.

- have any of you installed a cb in and or around the dash area?  Saw the thread about the earlier tracker (ashtray with a Uniden 520cb) but the ashtray area appears different on the 99-05's.

Looking forward to the comments/suggestions.

I have a cobra CB that has all the conrtols on the hand held piece. there is a little boc that the antenna connects too and that's velcroed to the carpet under my seat. the handheld part sits inbetween the driver's seat and center console... the one thing I don't like about it is the lack of PA capability

Thanks for the comments on the radio - trying to find one on Ebay.  What about the second battery?  Someone must be running a second battery and if so, where did you locate it?

I've thought of a second battery myself and I'm not sure on that one. perhaps behind the passenger side (US) rear fender next to the gas tank. might be enough room there, never really checked it out but somehow just thought of it so I figured I'd mention it. might be able to fit a smallish battery there

I'm not sure if your dash is like mine, but my cb is under the radio. This is a pick of when I was installing it:

The cables all go in nicely from behind, except the microphone which comes out from the front. I have a plastic cover for when it's not in use. The cable goes directly to the battery (with a fuse in between) and the antenna is fixed to the hood, so both cables go through the firewall in a hole that is next to the steering wheel. This hole is already there, it is covered by a rubber thingy.

I have a duel battery tray for my 04 GV, got it 6 months ago and still its not fitted.

to fit it you remove the small bottle behind the left head light and re fit it next to air box to make room.

It takes a 8 inch battery, but i want bigger, i have looked at many trays and have decided to try and fit a tray from a 2.4 hilux 1990 somthing ( toyota ute ), its got a good shape for fitment and is for 2, 8 inch batteries but i hope to fit a 10 inch and maybe a compressor next to it

the only thing you have to worry about is height

CB
I too have the new dash, i have fitted the GME UHF under steering colume and the remote face in the pocket behind the cup holders , when door is down you can't see the uhf at all.

I have a 2000 North American Tracker (left hand drive) and my dash is totally different.
Nice layout though.

When you are talking about a battery placement in front of the air box, are you talking about the left side when looking at the vehicle from the front? That is where the air box is on the 2000 4 cyl. in N.A.  The only room that some of us have is where the ABS unit sits (or doesn't)on the N.A drivers side in front of the firewall.  Unfortunately I have ABS so there is no room.

I was thinking under the rear cargo area - between the frame rails.  There appears to be plenty of room and attachment points.  I was thinking of making a shelf of sorts that a battery box would slide into thus avoiding the need to cut the floor.  Thoughts anyone?

This is the next project for me after the front and transfer case skid plates.

I meant placing the radiator overflow bottle on opposit side next to air box.

My battery tray was designed for 2000 gv wich has winscreen washer bottle behind headlight'
thats why tray suits 8 inch battery, my 04 has washer bottle in wheel arch with neck sticking out macking for more room.

I like the idea of fitting tray under the back, you would have anderson plug next to battery and run cable under car to duel battery system in engine bay and mount a 6 0r 8 fuze box of it so you would accessories to it by plugging into fuze box, so you dont have to crawl under car, piranha make a tray just like that for the new pathfiner/navara ute in oz , fits a 10 inch
sealed battery,

i will post some pic soon, but not of pathfinder tray, its at work and i have just started holidays.....yah.........

Now we're talkin! I'll check around for the box and tray. The fuses can be mounted in a sealed box under the hood or in the rear by the jack location if you wanted to power a portable 12v fridge.  I did something similar (sealed fuse box) for a rail buggy that I have.
