Forgot that I bought a belt as well.  What's the procedure for replacing the belt?  Loosen the tensioner and slide off?  Heck, I'm not even sure if there is a tensioner or if it's one of the components.

One tentioner pulley, just go left and it takes the tention off the belt so you can slide it off... that's pretty much it (one is for the fan but you usually don't need to replace it because well... its just an oval, doesn't bend anywhere else)

The serpentine you'll have to slide around the fan if you are not taking off the fan belt, which I didn't bother...

However in my case... my idle pulley siezed, so I replaced both that and tentioner pulley (yes there are two)... with the fan off... use a scope to hear whether or not you have any kind of noise off any other accessory... hopefully no

AJM, I replaced the serpentine belt on the truck |removethispart|@ around 91K miles. The original was squeaking on the pulleys.   It's your call (of course) but you might consider saving the new one for the next 90K.  They are easy to replace.  Takes about 5-10 minutes depending on how quickly you can loop the belts around the fan.

It's squeaking, a lot.  Had our first sub freezing evening last night and it was squeaking continuously.  Not the dreaded SQUUUUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAALLLL of my '96 Tracker but still pretty noticeably there.

What brand did you use?  I had terrible trouble on my '96 with the generic and parts store belts squeaking.  Eventually got a ACDelco brand belt and it worked great for the next several years before I sold it.  This one is  Goodyear.

As I recall I replaced it with a Dayco brand (sp?).  Bought it at O'Reilly's.  I was surprised they carried Dayco brand.  I retained the cardboard wrapper for future use, think it is out in Buster.  I'd have to look for it.

Yeah, never had good luck with those.

I stand corrected.  I found the cardboard wrapper and it wasn't a Dayco, it was a Gates brand belt part number #K050650  (5PK1653 17mm X 1667mm).

Man, just pushed on the fan belt and wow, it's loose.  Think I found the culprit.  Swear it wasn't like that before.

No, I did not replace the fuel filter on the red one.  I just replaced the fuel filter on my blue one a month ago.  OBTW, Buster began cranking a little longer than he should about a month ago... but ONLY when the temp dropped in the mornings. No CEL codes either.  I changed his fuel filter (he was over-due the change) but it didn't help the cold start so I replaced the idle air control valve with a new one from NAPA. The IACV fixed the hard start but that bugger cost $320 (plus shipping from VA) to replace it. It only took 15 minutes to swap it out - loosen the two bands holding the "L" shaped air hose from the air intake, remove the electrical connector from the IACV (clip), remove two phillips screws to remove the IACV and then reverse procedure to assemble... but OUCH$ that thing was salty priced!$!  

Fuel filters are tucked WAY up under the frame on the right rear in front of the fuel tank.  A real PITA to access plus the bolt that holds the band around the filter are usually rusted badly and you have to fight the bolt... blindly.  Hindsight, it might have helped to pull the right rear wheel, put jack stands under the frame and work from the wheel well.  I don't think you could see much better, but it probably would have been a hell of a lot more comfortable while doing it.

Check the tensioner bolt on the fan adjuster.  Bet'cha you found the culprit.

Tightened up the fan belt about as far as the adjuster will slide over and it still squeaks.  Trying to figure out if it got glazed or if it's the main belt.

Squeaks at start up then goes away at idle but when you raise the rpm's the squeak reappears and stays most of the time.  That said I didn't get it too warm this evening.

Appears to be a NAPA belt.




I think...think...when I did the fuel filter on my '03 GV I took off the tire.  Remember it being a PITA but not horrible.

I just replaced both my idle pulley & tentioner pulley (well the tensioner did sieze) and its good tention, all squeeling is gone

I'm kinda wondering about my pullies.

I never replaced the PS belt on Scout.  The PO might have replaced the power steering belt... but that would have been within the first 56K miles.... so it is doubtful.

I occasionally get a slight squeaking noise from either my idler pulley or my tensioner.  The noise isn't consistent though so haven't been able to figure out which is making the sound.  Doesn't always occur at start up nor does it always appear when the temp is either warm or cold.  Eventually goes away after I begin driving.
