Adding 4low to base AWD system

Hi,

One of the dealers I went to when buying my 06 mentioned that the base AWD system can be converted into the multi-mode system by adding a couple of solenoids in/on the transfer case & adding the switch to the dash. Has anyone looked into this? Apparentley the transfer case is mechanically the same regardless of the 4WD option you take.

Now that we have lift kits, it's time to play ;D


I'd ask the dealer who told me, but he tried to screw me over on the sale of the truck >:(

I heard that the transfercases were the same, I went with the base model because I  couldn't bring myself to buy an automatic. So, no 4low for me... Bad idea to not sell the manual with 4low, reguardless of trim package...

I also looked into lowering the gearing just a bit... the auto third members are lower than manuals... I want my power in the low end... Any one, let me know if you come across some third members off a wrecked auto 06 gv... Want them bad...

thats odd..

the GV5 over here is always standard equiped with 4low t-case, the 3 door diesel too, 3 door petrol isn't

Just got off the phone with the dealer... He said adding 4low is do-able. The problem is the transfer case will cost (if I heard him correctly) $5,500 for parts.... What is my best way to find a wreck/donor for some of these parts I want???

I believe there to be some truth to this. Last year when I was test driving the vehicles and talking with some of the Suzuki engineers, I got the impression that the t-cases were there but that low range key components were left out and could be added for functionality later. In fact, I remember one of the engineers saying that you could pull off a cover and manually shift the forks to get the 4wd lock mode vs. the slip-n-grip AWD even if your vehicle wasn't sold with that feature. It's been awhile (memory) so definitely double check this info... This also makes sense from a manufacturing cost perspective.

I know my GV will only make it to places like Moab by towing my Samurai behind it, but I still like the GV! I am totally ok with modifying the heck out of it... I got my lift on it, still no room for large tires. Cutting the wheel wells back may make room. What do you guys think? I want to learn more about the T-case. Also, I have already had my gv in some crazy places...This isn't a hopeless cause...

Well, I talked to the dealer more about adding 4low... 1,600 for all the mechanical parts, 1,200 for electrical... then the cost of labor... after all that he said they aren't sure it would even function because of the electrical stuff...

Probably cheaper to trade it for an '07 which does have 4-lo.

The manuals have 4low? The loss of trading in an 06 for an 07 would cost me about 5 G's... guesstimation

I've been doing some research (got an FSM ;D). Here's what I figure needs to be done:

Mechanically:

- add the counter shaft for 4L with it's bearings
- add the mating 4L gear on the output shaft
- change the fixed forks for the actuated forks

Electrically:

- add the 4WD module (don't know yet if the other computers need to be changed)
- the dash switch
- bits of harness under the truck

The funny thing is that the "one-mode" transer case actually has the center diff locker in it. There's just no way to activate it. The base case has two fixed forks, the diff locker and the reduction shift sleeve, just no 4L gearing. Meaning there may be a cheap way to at least add 4HI lock.

still working on it... my dealer's service manager looking into to it with Suzuki as well.

That is very cool!!! I have spoken with my dealer and he has been giving me answers that are in design meant to discourage me from finding out THE TRUTH!!! What is the dif gearing? Auto is lower, I want to swap!!!

I know this is an old thread, but I have been interested in the same question. I traded a Jeep Cherokee last year for my GV, and just didn't think about the low range until I took it down an old back trail into a state park and found some places that it would have been helpful.  It did do a good job not getting stuck in the mud.  I have thought of swapping transfer cases or even putting in one of these:

Have you managed the switch, it is encouraging that the diff lock is already in it.  Also, for the 4lo, would it be possible to choose the ratio's?

You could reduce that a lot if you sold the 2006 yourself then bought a 2007 private party used.
