Electronic Stability Program (ESP) problem, anyone?
« on: January 18, 2008, 10:19:10 AM »
2006 Grand Vitara, "luxury" model with all the extras, 2.7V6, auto trans.

One day last week, we got about 26" of snow during the work day.  My wife drove the car home from work through all that mess, giving the ESP/ABS a good workout.  The next day, she noticed that the "ESP" light is now always on whenever the ignition is on.  Driving the car a bit on an icy road also seems to indicate that the ESP system is now non-functional, although the ABS brakes still work as always.

Anybody else experience this?

So far: Pressed the "ESP Off" button a few times to see what would happen.  Nothing, that's what happens.  Took the car through a good undercarriage wash to see if there might be some road gunk that was fouling one of the wheel sensors.  No change.

Any ideas?

We just got the safety recall notice in the mail about the tranny slipping out of park, so I guess we'll be taking it to the dealer for that fix.  Maybe they'll do something with the ESP while they've got it.

The less ESP your wife has is probably for the better...
'03 ZR2 2dr Tracker, '02 XL-7 drivetrain and electrcs
XL-7 front coils
1.5" rear coil spacers
Monroe 32316 shocks w/2" extenders
235/70-16 Bridgestone Destination A/Ts on stock XL-7 Alloys RRO Rock Rails (Presently removed, as they rusted to all hell; all the bolts were rusted to dust.  Real nice, RRO...) http://www.trivia-nights.com

Just got mine back from the dealer because the light was on, and they said it needs a new brake control module. I figured it would be under warranty but they said no and it would be $2000 for the part alone. At 41,000 miles that is BS. I am really considering just trading the thing in on something else

It sounds like it should be under warranty... Did they say why it wasn't? You're under the miles... and should be under the time too... Maybe another dealer or a squeaky wheel approach would get it fixed? Sorry you're having problems.

The dealer said it was not under warranty. The 100k is only good for the powertrain alone nothing that controls it. I am going to call Suzuki in the morning and see what they say. Other than the light being on it seems ok, stops fine but right from day one you could not shut it off with the button. My wife drives it so I completly forgot about it. Any body know how to get the switch out or the center panel that holds the switch out? I might have to start a new thread on that question. Thanks
