arb air locker, value and install

After much consideration and debate I've decided to go with an ARB air locker in the rear of my tracker as opposed to a lockrite. The idea of having consistant control is worth more to me than the money I'd save going with the lockrite. For those of you running a ARB, I have a couple of questions: Is the on board compressor they sell with it ($240!!) really worth it? Can another type of compressor be used, such as The 12v one I use to inflate my tires with after a trail ride? Also how difficult is it , (the arb) to install. I just swapped diffs and that wasn't too bad. And lastly, if you do have to go with the arb compressor, where do you mount it? And Yes, I do drive it on the road quite a bit, with some extended freeway driving to get to the good stuff ( Paragon, in n/central PA.) So being able to unlock the Diff seems like a good thing to me.  Any input greatly appreciated.

Yes, I do believe it is worth having an ARB.
I couldn't telll ya if you could use another style of compressor or not. Some people do I'm sure.
I have the ARB compressor.
As for where to put the compressor.
I put it where the Radiator overflow tank was. between the
 strut tower and the brake booster
The overflow is from a 92 Tracker mounted next to the Radiator
I'm sure it's as easy as replacing the center carrier with the ARB unit.
Just drill and tap a hole in the right spot for the airline.
I put mine in a semi bad spot. Right behind the 3rd link
(had to drill a hole through it for the air line)

i use a truck air compressor little one and no issues,  i do have a tank in line to store up some air

(off topic a little)

Referring to the pic above, what did you do with your windshield washer bottle to put the solenoid box there?  Do you still have one, or did you find an alternate place for it?

I relocated the coolant overflow bottle to the strut tower hole, and mounted the compressor as shown.  I have a header installed on the compressor, with hoses going to the two lockers, and one going to the 2.5 gallon tank I mounted between the frame rails under the back seat.  Also, I have a quick-disconnect coupler for an air-hose to air up my tires.  This is only so-so for airing up - it takes a LOT of air to take my 31X10.50's from 8 psi back up to 23 psi.

The 4th blue-air-hose you see, goes to an in-dash pressure gauge, mounted in the cigarette-lighter hole.

i would kill my compressor if it was outside the car due tot he amount of water over here

I've been through plenty with my ARB compressor under the hood and it's fine. They are not the fastest around for airing up but they do keep going and they are fully rebuildable which is better than some. Yes, you can use other compressors but you will need a pressure switch.

I've got the ARB compressor on mine, it comes with the wiring loom to run it and control the front and rear lockers which makes it just a plug and play type installation which to me was worth the few extra $$'s.

I've mounted my compressor in the rear of the trucklet, it's a little noisy but you get probably four or five times of engaging the lockers before it turns on again to build the pressure back up.

What is the air gauge setup for?

I see one on Bobzooki's vehicle as well?

If I was to guess i would say a air tank?

I just fitted it so I know what pressure the system is running at. You don't have to run one but it's handy to have.
