Gear Noise?
« on: December 05, 2005, 10:06:45 AM »
I have a small problem with my 96 2dr tracker. It's making a humming sound (from a gear it sounds like) that gets louder with speed. Breaking, depressing the clutch or "in or out" of neutral doesn't affect the sounds either way. It does it in 2-High and I haven't checked in 4lo or 4hi but I bet it wouln't change it .I thought it might be something in my diff so I changed the oil in the front and rear and didn't see any chunks of metal or any other indications of badness. I've also begun to repack the front hubs in an effort to see something. The passenger hub seems to be interesting though. The inside collar that connects the Axle to the sliding engagment collar seems to be loose in the hub housing. Is there supposed to be any play in it? could that be the cause of my sound or just something else horribly wrong. Anyway is there anything else that could cause that sound?  I"m stumped. I'm gonna check the tranny oil and transfercase oil but I dunno after that.

it could be a bearing in the tranns or t case, or a wheel bearing
