4x4 Lockers
« on: March 27, 2005, 08:14:33 AM »
Hello everyone,
I am buying two samurai's and on one of them I want to do some off roading. I understand that one of the best things to do first is put lockers in the front and rear. The off road zuki will have a 5' lift kit with 31' tires. What do you experts think.     Allen in Mo

I'm thinking that you would get a lot of responses if you posted this in the main Suzuki forum, and not in the garage sale...  ;)

i think 33s locked in the rear is a good start 6.5:1 lowrang for the t-case instead of a front locker that should last u a couple of years until u realy learn ur sami. next powersteering then a front locker, front locker makes it really hard to steer. i would swap in yota axles and go to 35s locked front and rear, before locking the front, for one hell of a rig. maybe even a 1.6 swap when u go to 35s.

i just finished reading ur post lower with the same title different question though. i have a lock-rite in my tracker in the rear. it is unbelivable what it can go through just by adding the locker. i would not waste my money on a rear ARB but instead use a lock-rite or detroit in the rear. i would however use an ARB in the front so u can unlock during tight trail turns. just go with the lift, tires lowrange, and maybe the lock-rite in the rear its $150 and not to hard to put in. a sami t-case reduces high range gear from stock it is 1.49:1. if u run 31s or 33s u will experiance quite a bit of power loss the 6.5:1 lowrange will reduce u r high range and low range so ur street ability and the offroad ability will greatly be increased by reducing gear. if u want to find out what big luggy tires do install ur lift drive it with the stock tires and then install the mud terain tires and cry about the loss of what little power u had. reducing gears will help u get about 95% of that power back. good luck. this is a right up that is on the calmini web site on the 6.5:1 lowrange.

Unlike what's currently available in low range gear kits for the Samurai, you won't find any junky welded gears in this kit or the need to heavily alter the factory transfer case.   Our kit contains 4 completely new gears machined from billet material! Manufactured in the USA to exceed factory tolerances from quality SAE 8620 alloy. Now, you can re-gear your Samurai drive train completely through the transfer case. A TRUE 20.2% Hi-Range reduction will correct highway gearing for 32â€? -33" tall tires. A whopping 187% reduction in low range offers a range that is over twice as low as our current 4.16:1 kit - It’s almost too low for some instances. Either way, this is the lowest ratio gear reduction kit for your Samurai. We don't leave anything out - It's a complete kit sold with Input Shaft, High Output Gear, Low Output Gear, Counter Gear, Counter Shaft & bearings, thrust washers, gaskets and detailed instruction booklet. Installs like factory parts - NO GRINDING or CUTTING is required to install! It even comes with oil! The mandatory first step towards building an awesome off road Samurai.

1986-95 Samurai, SJ413 SS5031 $695.00 REG. $795.00

The Lock-Rite Locker is an automatic positive differential that is second to none when extreme traction is needed off road. We have used this unit from Moab to the Rubicon and can testify to the incredible increase in the performance of your vehicle. No special tools required to to install.
