Speedo problems...I need help with this
« on: August 23, 2005, 10:35:23 AM »
AAAAHHHHHGGGGG!
New cable, was too long, got kinked when I put the cluster back in.  It broke no 5 miles.  Then I got a new cable, re routed it because it was long also.  I had to cut off the end that goes into the cluster, because it stuck out too far.  Worked fine for 15 miles, then the speedo registered slower and slower until it said 5mph when I was going 75.  Is it the cable or the cluster? I got the cluster at a wrecking yard almost a month ago.
I need suggestions
Thanks
Jeff

Where are you getting the cable?  I went to Kraggen first and got the wrong one that needed to be trimmed.  I finally went to the dealer and they gave me the right cable that fit perfectly...no problems since.

Where are you getting your cable? Have you called Hawk?

I got home too late to investigate.  I now suspect I may have cut too much off the end.  This has been a frustrating problem.  I have spent almost $400 trying to get this thing fixed.  The cables came from Advanced auto.  When I was looking for a cluster, Hawk never called me back, and I found one for $55 instead of $150 plus shipping from Hawk.  I will call around today, if there is time, I never know how busy my job will be.

Re: Speedo problems...Now we have wobble
« Reply #4 on: August 25, 2005, 07:11:54 PM »
Ok so last nite I took the cluster out to see that the cable had pulled off the speedo , but not all the way.  The after market cable end is metal, while the oem is plastic.  The I had not trimmed off too much on the inner cable.  Maybe not enough.  This time I shoved the cable on hard to get it to clip on, but it doesnt hold very tight.  Now the speedo works, but there is lots of wobble until you get up to 55mph, then it is real steady.  Why the wobble?

Wobble is from the cable not
rotating smoothly, it winds up
and spins,, winds and spins.

Relocate the cable so it makes a
more smooth routing to prevent
this problem.

Did this cable come with the outer
cover as well ???  Or was it just the
cable inner piece ???

It was both.  I bought the second cable, but just used the inner part because installing the outer part was kind of a PITA.  But when I put the second inner part in, I re routed the cable closer to the firewall and over the steering mount.  The aftermarket cable is a foot longer than stock.  I did't find that out until I had it in.  I also found out that a new cable from Suzuki is only $43.  Would have been well worth the extra $16.  Hindsight!  I guess I need to do more work before this one goes out also.  I also calculated my total cost for this problem incorrectly.  I have spent $300 not $400.  Its still too much money.  $150 of it was because of a BAD mechanic to start with. He also ruined the watertemp gage, and did not hook up the wires up right, so the Tach wouldnt work.  With my mechanic, $40 went to him checking out what the other guy did wrong.  He showed me that I could do the cluster myself.
Thanks for the info Wild,

Too much $$ for a speedo, Sorry to
hear about your bad mechanic.

The reason I asked about the cable outer
or Shieth, is that the lube in the old cable
is likely dried up and needs to be re-lubed,
but don't use grease, it's too thick, not now
in the summer, but in the winter it will make
the speedo cable wind up and whip the speedo
needle.

You need some light oil, or WD-40 like lube to
loosten the old lube up, you might even find
out what a speedo shop would use.

Hope you get this worked out with no more $$
out of your pocket

Good Luck

Already used The lube that came with it.  Its called motormite.   Should I take it out and wipe it off and use WD-40?  I will talk to my mechanic.  I think he used WD-40 on the old one.
Thanks again,

How are you reattaching the speedo cable to the back of the cluster?  It was a real pain in the ass for me to reattach the speedo cable on my '98 Tracker.  The cable was too short to attach to the cluster while it was out of the dash so I had to remove the left speaker and reach in behind and push the cable in.  There is not much room back there and it was hell trying to get some leverage to snap the cable back in.

I just finnished checking things out.  I can't find any tight bends, but....
The left air vent tube was causing a tight bend.  I looked at it long and hard.  Then I remembered that The speedo went over that tube.  So I moved the cable around a wire bundle and over the tube.  The cluster seemed to go in easier.  Now I only get wobble until I get to 16 mph.  It wobbled up to 55 mph.  I guess thats as close as I can get.
Wild, is that good enough? do I need to re lube with WD40?

If you used the lube that came with it
you should be good, a little wobble ??
well I guess it could be the cable quality
or a slight bend in the cable, either way
I don't think you want to buy another one
so I would just leave it

FWIW I'm still running the stock cable,
only 275,000 miles on it  :)
