Gas mileage...whats yours?
« on: July 18, 2005, 04:15:49 PM »
It's been bugging me.....

That I seem to be getting dramatically better gas mileage than everyone else that I've heard comment.......then it dawned on me.......I work out everything to a CANADIAN gallon.

The Canadian gallon is 20% bigger so my 38mpg is really 31mpg US gallon

Hows that compare?

The wifes unit is a 1992 SideKick 4 dr, 1.6/16v, 5 speed, 4X4 of course.
- P215-75-15 all terrains
- K/N Aircleaner
- 2" Exhaust with Turbo muffler

95' 4dr kick JLX 5speed 16v 1.6
215-75-15 wranglers
27-28mpg, but my speedo is ailing.

Went on a 340 mi trip to the mountains, with about 20mi in 4wd, 60mi more on dirt road,
crossing the Colorado continental divide 3 times, and a pass at over 12,000 feet, 30.4 mpg!
Zag, you get better mpg than me. I need to get a new cat back system, I was thinking of calmini's.Do you have a better suggestion?  About 2 ft of my tail pipe rusted off, and looks as if there is rustage around seam of the muffler. Is your k/n filter a separate unit or a drop in the old air box kind.  After reading about the snorkel thing, does the zuke need that box and other extra tubing in the wheel well? I am also looking at new tires before winter, and I want 235's but I worry about rubbing.  I am thinking of doing the spring spacer thing this winter. Would that help?

Mine is an 89' automatic TBI 1.6 8V
brand new never got better than 23
mostly 21-23

Now with 33" tires, 5.83 gears total
of 7 inches of lift and the turbo I get
18-20 highway, all considered I didn't
think that was a big MPG price to pay
for the mods, and the power, well it's
worth the drop to pass Jeeps on the
Steeps   ;D

Echojeff

The Calmini stuff looks good but I've never used it. I always get my stuff done locally because
1) I'm cheap
2) I always try to support the local racers that support me and there's a bunch in the exhaust
    biz.

If it was me and you have a good exhaust shop that the rodders and racers use I'd go for a 2 1/8" tube from the CAT back and use a "Turbo Style" good quality muffler....my complete system from the manifold back...installed...only cost $200.00.
If there is no one in your area with a good rep or they are crazy expensive the Calmini system does look like a good option...ask around on the board for guys that have used it.

My airfilter is the KN replacement filter in the stock airbox with a couple extra 2" holes drilled in it.
I use NGK plugs ( the V fire not the platinum or multi prong) NGK 8mm wires and keep the pig in time and clean.

By the way I cruise the Hi Way at 120-130km (about 70-75mph)

thanks zag

that's pretty good milage for me considering it's all city miles in vancouver with all the hill and traffic. i also drove it harder during that tank of gas, usually i'm lite on the gas pedal and never rev it past 3000rpm. i also fill it way before it needs to so i never really new what my milage was, i always figured it was around 25mpg  :)

i'm going to be installing my calmini header in the next few weeks, and a complete new exhaust 2" with a high flow cat, and muffler. i can't wait to see what kind of power, and milage gains i get.

the goblin running 33's on a 8 valve engine, 5spd and 5.12's, with K&N drop -in filter and a header with full 2-1/4" exhaust, through all the hills around here, I get about 17mpg without correcting for the speedo being off 15mph at 60mph...
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...
