I would be happy if they just went back and did a modern re-engineering of the Samurai.

More power, better seats,  longer wheel base maybe if that would help the rollover.  Make the interior at least  as tough as the rest. And as long as im throwing out wishes, give it shift on the fly.

I hate the look of the new trackers, they all look sad, like they cant believe they grew up and their knees went bad.

aw crap, i just realized my tracker comment might start a flamewar,

I should say i prefer the straight ege styling of the Samurai over the rounded edge styling that is prevalent now a days

Dream Zuk=Modern facelift of the Samurai.  Similar styling with NO sheet metal.  A full nylon/poly body(like the stuff that plastic playgrounds are made of).  Sitting on a hydroformed frame for weight and strength.  A softtop design like the trackers.  Drivetrain would be a smaller, lighter, 6cyl GM Duramax Turbo Diesel mated to a smaller, lighter Allison 6spd manual trans :o.  Dana Super 70 axles from a GM 5500, with Eaton G80 lockers front and rear :o.  35x14.5's from the factory on beadlock rims wide enough to balloon them out :o.  Teraflex shackles, stock SPOA, with aggressively arched springs.  Inside, Vinyl seats from a Chevy Work Truck with 5-point harnesses, GPS/DVD Nav system, XM Radio and a built in CB(all waterproof marine equipment, of course).  And a bilge pump for the footwells/rear tub. A full gauge cluster with climometer.  And don't forget the snorkel, molded right in the the window pillar and seamlessly connecting to the intake system.  Accessories available would be a 12000lb winch and a light bar using bulbs that light the ski slopes at night.  Oh, and don't forget the towing package, so you can tow around your "classic" 1st gen Sammi ;D

As long as your hubs are locked, high range is always shift on the fly.

If your hubs are locked, your drivetrain is all moving at equivalent speed.  Most tcases will shift from 2 high to 4 high better while in motion than at a stop.

i thought it wasnt good for the front to stay hub locked all the time?

I't's not "good" for it because all of the parts turn and wear unnecesarily.  But you can lock them in when you suspect you might need 4x4.  I lock mine before I take off on winter mornings and unlock when I get to work.  If I need 4x4, it is shift on the fly.  When I go wheeling, I lock the hubs at the trail and shift in and out as I desire.

Shift on the fly vehicles either have permanently locked hubs or some sort of axle disconnect, usually vacuum operated.  The vacuum operated systems are usually slow and noisy and the permanently locked versions are just like running with your hubs locked.

I like the alum 2.6 idea. what about warping in water crossings though, or the turbo maintenance. less parts the better. what about a 240hp 2.0 from the honda S2000? lol.

im only really referring to the current design of the tracker, i really like the old ones from like 1994.   The current design has the rounded hood corner down to the headlight panel.......just looks so sad to me, like the tracker is depressed.

I'd love to see some more powerfull, and especially torquey engines available.  Kept small of course, to keep the weight down.

My wife drives a diesel VW Golf, I'd love to have an engine with those specs in a Sidekick - a 1.9 liter engine with 100hp and 177 lbs-ft of torque.  Not to mention the new diesel engine in the Passat - 2.0 liter - 134hp and 247 lbs-ft of torque.

I think forced induction is the way to go, for a gasoline engine, a supercharger would be great for low end torque.  I'm more interested in low end torque than maximum horse power.  It has been said that "people buy horsepower and drive torque".

My only complaints with the sammy are the lack of power and the cheesy interior.......  if there were just some high quality interior refits.....real mirrors......etc.......i could be completely happy
