absolutley free intake mod

absolutley free intake mod

today i was bored so me and a friend looked at my intake and relized the tube for the air intake wasnt much bigger than a mcdonalds straw lol...so we broke out the dremel....wat we did wsa yank the filter case off and made an aproximate 4 by 5 in hole in the bottom...wat a differnce...the only thing is that u can actually hear the engine more...it sounds lieka  real engine now lol...wat it does is over rides the tube and in theory lets a lot more air flow to provide the engine with more air alowing it to breath better.right now im using a stock filter so wit a k&n i should notice a much bigger difference...also it wont alow water in like the ram air theory with the pipe pointing right behind the grill..

Bad Idea, and it really don't work.
I did this mod, drilled the bottom of the
air filter box with a 1/2" drill bit, put like
25 holes in it, yes you hear the motor, kind
of like the "snorkle honk" if you put one of
those on. The hole in the front is one of 2
openings in the intake system, the other
one is inside on the fender, and has about
1 3/4" round opening, the one in the front
pulls cool air from the turn signal area at
the front of the fender.

All you will do is end up getting water dirt and
leaves in the bottom of the filter housing, but
if it sounds better you might think it's faster,
I did not get any more power when I did it, and
I was doing 1/4 mile timed tests, Sorry  :(

see i can see holes not doing anything ...i put a 5 by bout 4 in cut out in .....true it does allow more dirn but water not really only cause the wheel well protecs it fomr water ...also i  have done sum 0-60 tests and htey have proved to be sum what quicker...and on the highway i have more passing power. dirt on the other hand wont be to much of a problem also caust eh bottom is protected by the wheel well but it will scuk more dirt in...this wouldnt be a problem as long as u have a k&n filter because u can jsut clean it...i mean it  a personal preference ..im happy with it and as soon as i get another k&n in ill report back to u on e hte performance

Like I said, if it makes it faster to you ;D
I totaly perforated the bottom of the filter
housing and got nothing, I thought the same
thing at first, like the dirt bike guys did it, so can I
and was disappointed.

BTW do you have a 16Valve motor? or the 8 Valver???

I did this mod kindof like Wild there except I used a 1" wood bit and made holes on the bottom and sides of the box. The reason was I had mine off and seen the small intake tube from the fender and the thin plastic duct in the fenderwell. Like breathing thru a straw..Whether I get any performance has yet to be determined.

Now I had a 500cc Suzuki Quadracer and removing the airbox lid all together made a big difference!!!

On the Tracker????

I ditched the whole intake system in favor of a k&n open element air filter. I then bent a 3 inch pipe to go from the housing on top the carb to the passenger side fender. I also made an aluminum sheild that runs down the fender to protect the filter from dirt and heat. I noticed a huge improvement, but I also think that you need to be able to get the air out as fast as you can get it in. You may not notice much of a difference in your intake mod if you are trying to push all that air out a stock exhaust. Now when I say huge think in suzuki terms. I.E. huge = 2h.p. Chunk blew his motor because of this mod at zukimelt. We both came flying out of the water tubes. My intake system is stock. Chunks was an open filter like you guys are discussing. Chunk Hydrolocked his motor. I had no problems. I did this mod to my old 8Valve tracker. No real performance was gained.  :( That is why I left my 16Valve stock.

Ya if you go in alot of deep water keep it stock or snorkle. I personally dont go in much water that deep.

yea right now ive gone through bout two feet of water and no probs
so idk wa im gonna do if i decide to do sum major bogging...also ive noticed better high way passing power wit this mod so idk

From many an experience with other 4x4's, the open air element is your enemy offroading because what Mike said above.  I've seen at least 2 trucks in the last year or so hydrolock because of the open element.  One completely toasted a motor, and the other got lucky and managed to escape with the motor intact.

On some vehicles, drilling the airbox does help.  It made a significant difference on my '01 Explorer because of the way the airbox was designed.

For those of you who do drill out your airbox, you have to re-set your computer if you have an OBD-1 or newer equipped vehicle because the MAF tells the motor how much air is being pulled in to optimize the air/fuel ratio.  The computer averages this over a set time frame, so if you increase the air flow, you won't see the immediate gains unless you re-set the computer by pulling the negative battery terminal for a couple of minutes.
