THINKING OF PUTTING AN AUTOMATIC IN FRED'S STRETCHED SAMI. WANDERING IF ANYONE HAS EVER DONE THIS AND WHAT PROBLEMS THEY ENCOUNTERED?KNOW IT TAKES SOME TUNNEL MODIFICATION HAS 2 INCH BODY LIFT FOR CLEARENCE. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED

If I can remember correctly back when Alex B's mailing list was still really active (who knows maybe it still is). The Auto swap was talked about alot.

1-2wd Trackick auto tranny, 1.6L engine-Sami t-case. Shortened intermediate shaft and body lift with some tunnel pounding was required.

2-Chevy Chevette 1.6L with auto tranny (carbed so setup was super simple), shortened intermediate shaft and 3" body lift were required. There actually was a writeup for this with everything needed even the years of the Desiel Chevette and mating that to a 4cyl gas auto. I had downloaded the entire writeup and pics back in 99 but I KNOW I don't have it anymore (PC crashed hard doing a file conversion for work and HD was toasted).

Check the Canadian Yahoo search engine. Everything good, simple, and cheap that worked came out of Canada. Chevette swap was pretty popular up there with Alex's crew as they were plentiful and make the sami a rocket even with a carbed motor.

I've heard it is easier to use a 4wd transmission and tranfer case from a track/kick, than to use a 2wd trans.

If you use a 4wd trans and t-case, it fits in the same amount of room as the samurai's transmission. With some trans tunnel work I'm sure.

Sean at aftermarket4x4 has done this install to a HT zuk with a spoa. You may ask him for more help. He knows his zuks.

I put an auto in my samy, probally one of of my best mods I did. You dont need a body lift or have to cut the tunnel, you just have to spend about an hour with the stock scissor jack to widen the tunnel. Using the 4wd transmission with OTT's Kicker3 makes the install easy. It also gives you the bonus of dual cases and marries everything together so you have a smooth drivetrain, well worth the $600. Off road the automatic performs awesome, it just crawls then if you need some wheel speed just stomp on and it goes. I was concerned how well it would hold up, I installed a temp gage and the needle barley moves off the peg even after wheeling it hard all day.

 Ã‚ Do you have the 3-speed or 4-speed auto? I'm toying around with the idea of using the 3-speed in my tintop :)

   I agree I love wheeling with the auto in my tracker

the 3-speed, the 4-speed is computer controlled, just more stuff to go wrong
