Timing cover gasket
« on: November 07, 2021, 05:16:22 AM »
Hi all.

I am reinstalling the timing cover on a friend’s 84 SJ 410 and the timing cover has some old and partially rotted away gasket material behind the inner cover.

I have not had any success finding replacement OEM gasket material online.

Has anyone made this gasket themselves and if so what type and thickness of material did you use?

Thanks
Chris

Megazip.net has the gasket, #11396-71C00 - $4.10 plus shipping.

Thanks for the response.

That gasket appears to seal the inner and outer timing covers.

I received this Suzuki with the cylinder head, radiator, timing components, etc disassembled and in the cab of the truck. There wasn’t a gasket that you provided information on so it’s good to know that it’s missing.

The service manual didn’t mention that particular gasket.

The gasket I am referring to is on the outside of the inner timing cover and sits between the inner timing cover and the engine block.

I read in another post where it had swelled to the point where it was causing at least one of the pulleys to rub against the timing cover. The suggested fix was to shave it down or just remove it altogether.

If I cannot locate a replacement I will find a suitable material and make the gaskets for that part of the timing cover. There are a few on there and all have deteriorated.

Thank you.

The number I provided earlier is for the outer gasket, the inner seals (there are three) are also available from the same source, at very reasonable prices - you should be able to get all four pieces for under USD$20, plus shipping.

Is this for the v1.0?  I have a rebuild gasket kit that is gathering dust test you can have.  Bought it years ago off ebay just in case when I had my old SJ I should never have sold.

As far as I know the timing cover gaskets are not commonly included in rebuild kits - they certainly weren't in the kit I used.  They're not really a gasket, more of a "foam" dust seal type deal.
