Proportioning valve leaking!
« on: May 27, 2020, 06:20:59 PM »
1996 4 dr 1.6l 16v base trim auto 4wd. Geo Tracker. I am way high up in the Mojave Preserve in the mountains. I have just checked my brake fluid and found it way low. It is coming out of the proportioning valve.  Bad timing. Good dirt everywhere!  First question is can I just keep pouring in fluid as long as I don't let it get to low. Can I do anything to slow the leak like wiring the valve down until we get back to civilization?
Next question is: I see this sold as a proportioning valve. Am I right that it is a manual one? Can I use this if I always have the same load if I cant get a Geo Tracker one?

https://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/proportioning-valve-kit.html

 Next question is about this.

https://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/suzuki-samurai-single-line-proportioning-valve.html

It is for a Suzuki and the numbers are not the same but it looks the same. I have the single line brakes. I was warned that threads might be different between Geo Suzuki and Chevy but really?

Meanwhile I will keep looking. At least I have data up here anyway.

Is this the valve under the hood?  Unless there is something wanky, Sidekick and Tracker parts should interchange.  Where is it leaking on the valve?  Is it leaking around a fitting?

Valve is in the rear underneath just ahead of the rear diff. It is leaking from the top, . Can't see exactly where but I do not think it is leaking from the metal pipe fittings going in and out.

Is yours equipped with a height sensing proportioning valve?  If it is, there will be a lever attached to the body or frame of the vehicle that attaches to the proportioning valve.  Have you been able to at least make it home safely?

Yes. Thanks for the reply. That is the one we have.   I did wire the lever down as some indicated might stop the leak. It did slow it a lot. Enough that we were able   to  take it out trail riding a couple of times ;D.  I did talk to a friend in Hatteras who maintained a fleet of Trackers that were rented for beach use. He said that it is common for those to be unobtainable in a number of older cars and that replacing it with a simple proprotioner with a manual adjustment is what is done if there is no replacement.  He said I may even be able to pick one up at a performance shop when I return to civilization and drop it in. The three pipe model is the right one.

Tomorrow I will check out my parts rig.  It has the height sensing prop valve.  If you will pay the shipping, it is yours.  I won't have any use for it.

Wow!  That would be great! I was slightly concerned about the manual one working right. I'll PM with info for contact. We will be on the move towing the tracker to a campground where we can get mail
so that will work great. I appreciate the work it may take to get it out. Thank You!

Here is a progress report. I found a manual valve but- The original has a third hose that returns to a valve up front. It shuts off the brake pressure to the rear if
the rear brakes lose pressure. This lets you continue with the front only.  It actually did this in my case and I can still stop the car fine with front only. With the Wilwood manual all breaks would be lost due to leaks and or  air in the rear. Too dangerous.
Jollyzuk offered to go out and see if he could get one off of his old trucklet for me but I hate have him do that.
I found one in Japan which will be here in three weeks or so which will be easier to install. Till then I have front brakes.  No worries here!!  I'll let you know how it works when it is done. I know many have a hard time getting these. This came through Megazip.net Pricey but why toss out a  great tracker.

Update: For anyone who needs a proportioning valve  Megazip does provide an actual stock Suzuki part (or something so close I can't tell.) Mine came in just over 2 weeks and is in the car now. No problems other than getting the old one out.
