215/75-15 vs 225/75-15 Tires
« on: January 25, 2019, 08:38:15 AM »

Hello all (empty room?  >:D),
I have a 2002 Chevy Tracker 4dr 2.0 base model.  My Low Range Offroad 2" lift is in the mail... It is common belief that 215/75-15 (27.1") tires fit easily on the Tracker.
They also look slightly small on a 2" lift from what I have seen. The next size up is 225/75-15 at 28" or mostly listed 28.3".
They should fit on y Tracker with a 2" lift?
And how about power loss going 'up to' lol 225/75-15? I am trying to get the most (clearance, stance, looks etc) while doing the least (not killing the decent power on what I currently have for tires (215/70-15 - rather small tires).
Thanks for any thoughts.

Sometimes I answer my own questions... I will be going 215/75-15 for the reason that the diameter variance is 3.15% from the 215/70-15's that are on it now.
I have read not to vary more than 3% somewhere on these small motored vehicles.
Gotta keep it working good... as in easy on the clutch, not losing too many rpm's and able to go up hills with decent ease.
Pics in mid/end of Feb with my lift & tires installed.

Stock now...

Whilst you do need to keep an eye on the change in diameter, I'd say that limiting to a 3% variance is being overly cautious - I'm running a GV with the 2.0 liter engine and the 5 speed manual, so effectively the same vehicle - I went from the OEM 235/60R16 to 225/70R16 which is a little under 5% increase with no noticeable change in performance, and I'm currently running 235/70R16s which is 6+% and the difference is just noticeable - I can still hold cruise speeds up most hills in fifth.

Thanks for the input FORDEM.
From the 215/70-15's (26.9") to the 225/75-15 (28.3") is 5.2%.
Obviously it goes through the gears pretty easy with the well worn 215/70-15 tires. It also turns 3000 + rpm's at 70mph with these small tires. I would hope to still have 2700 to 3000 rpm's at 70 when finished. I hope 5th will still be useful. Now if I could find some 5.12's...  >:D

Also, I am figuring in tire weight, which are just big rubber flywheels. I am looking at a pretty street (all season) tire, which come in at 22-25 lbs. More aggressive tires can weigh 26-32 lbs. It all adds up.
Toyo AT-II, has a pretty light AT tire at 28 lbs. General Grabber AT tire is 30.5 lbs. I am leaning towards the Cooper Trendsetter SE all season at a pretty light 22 lbs. I can have 10 lbs per tire lighter if I shop smart.
As you can tell I sometimes think things over too much. :D
I don't know if Discount Tire will let me try two different tires for fitment & rpm's...

If weight is something you're concerned with, you should consider dumping those heavy steel wheels and going with something aluminum. It makes a noticeable difference on a 2.0. Either a set of stock 15x6 alloys from a salvage yard, or choose one of the many available sets of wheels available in the aftermarket. Most can be had for under $500.
Also, while 5.12's can be difficult to find, your 5-speed Tracker has the 4.62's, so you could upgrade to 4.88's since they're a dime a dozen. (All autos had the 4.88's)
On tire sizes....I recently acquired my 3rd Tracker. (An 03 4 door auto 2.0) And the first thing I did (since it needed tires anyway), was move up to a 225/75/15 winter tire. I bought the same 2" spacer lift you bought, so I'll be buying another set of wheels/tires in the spring and moving up to a 30x9.50 tire once the lift is installed. I'll keep the stock wheels and 225's for winter use. I also plan to gear down to a 5.12 set since the 30's will bog it down for sure.

I am on the same page as you Jeff. How are the 225/75-15's working for you?? That size is my 'large tire' option lol. I have 'over tire'd' before (on a 4 banger Toyota truck), and I don't want to do that here - too big a tire makes for hard take offs on a grade (with a manual). Don't want to do that to my wife when she drives it. Right now, I have really good support from her as long as I don't make 'sky junk' out of our little itty bitty car ;-).
Search LP Adventure Subaru... That is the result I am aiming for. Sporty adventure rally tow vehicle, LOL!

Here is an LP Adv car, with 215/75-15 tires no less! (claimed tired size anyway)

This is the only picture I have of it so far since taking ownership. I pulled it into my buddies garage a few weeks ago for a paint correction. (That's him running the buffer.)
This Tracker had 215/70's on it when I bought it, and I'd be lying if I said there was no noticeable decrease in performance going up to the 225/75 Firestone Winterforce, but it isn't that bad. If we're talking numbers, I would say there was maybe a 5% decrease in power. I lost about 2mpg, and it downshifts a little sooner, and holds a lower gear a little longer than before, but again, it's really not that bad. All my previous Trackers have been autos, so I can't say what effect it would have on a manual in terms of pulling out on a hill. I will say it's been a nonissue for me.
Also, I don't have any clearance issues with the 225's either, but I have different wheels than you. The steel wheels have more of a negative offset than the alloys, so the inside edges of the tire may rub the frame rail at full lock with your application. I ran 225's on my first Tracker on those same steel wheels and it only rubbed a clean spot on the frame rails. I never really noticed it from behind the wheel.

Here's another pic...
This is my first Tracker, (also an 03 2.0 auto). It's wearing 225/75/15 Kumho All Terrain tires in that pic with stock suspension and your steel wheels.

Looks good Jeff.
I do believe I will stick with my original choice of 215/75-15 (Toyo AT-II), purely for minimal power loss. I have 1” wheel spacers in hand also so I will try with & without on the stock steelies (basically for looks/stance).

Went with the 225/75-15. Like the look on Jeffs Tracker, same look on mine now. Power loss is minimal but felt - on the hills mostly. Turning about 2700-2800 rpm's at 60 mph in 5th.
2" lift should set it right.  8)  Milk toast tires, but adequate enough for our needs.
