Power tips
« on: March 11, 2004, 11:12:30 AM »
I am redoing my 90 tracker starting with the motor.  my mech. and i have tried to think of everything we can but i would like some input from all of you too.  there are alot of V8 trucks around here and i am tired of them pulling out in front of me cause they think i cant catch them... which i cant >:(
so here is what i got, it should be put in and running in 3 to 4 weeks...
throttle body spacer, calmini cam, 3 angel grind valves, ported and polished intake and head, underdrive pulley, calmini header, flowmaster exhaust, no cat. converter, 2" exhaust, el. radiator fan (no belt driven one, not alot of water crossings around here), ngk spark pluges.
running stock coil and distributor and wires....good idea?
so any thing else you all think i could do to get some more hp out of this lil motor?  any idea what my hp will be?  oh, and i will be running S.S. tslsx 30 x 10.5s W/ stock gears.

2nd Q.  i have read everything i can find here about alternators.  but am a bit confused, sometimes i cant tell if the sugestions are for sams or trakicks.  i really need more amps badly.  the under drive pulley helped power a bit but now everything dims at night with the heater running.
thanks. :P

Tweek the regulator for more volts,
that's what gives you bright lights.

The mods you list should do the trick,
just port the intake, polish is just more
money for little to no incresae in power.

Check the condition of the battery, alternator, cables, etc just to double check the condition of your electrical system. Better than spending money that you didn't need to. Try using a MSD Blaster2 coil, you'll like the help. I've been using one for years, love it.
If you're lucky, you'll be barely above what a stock 16v is, about 100 horse, maybe?
Also, think heavily about doing gears in the axles. It will make all the difference in the world! If you have a standard trans, try using 5.38s or 5.62s. You currently have 5.12s. Another thing you could do, is go through OTT Industries and go with one of their kicker3 cases mated to a sammy case, the gearing options and extra gearing  change that you might need, it is a relatively cheap and very worthwhile investment. ;D

Hi Idaholwb,
I would like to know more about 5.38s and OTT Industries.

I can't imagine trying to turn those tires with an 8-valve!

A 16 valve will get you 20 HP with no mods.
I definitely recommend the 5.83 ring & pinions - it'll correct for the tire size, and make your speedo and odo RIGHT again, plus help with your pickup.

I've GOT to look into that turbo!

Oh, and if trucks are pulling out in front of you, and you can't catch them, what difference does it make?

somebody said u cant imagine turning those tires (30's) with an 8v!!!
i have 31s with my stock 1.3 (samurai) and it manages to keep up... all depends on preference... race car? 4x4 machine? or both...
both=money, so i had to sacrifice one

Wow!  thanks for the fast input.  i had forgot to mention that the K&N is coming next week 8)  i will be looking into that coil next.  what does 'tweek' the regulator mean?  OTT? never heard of them, got a link?  are those gears ganna kill my bank account?  and i am pretty good with tools, is that something i can do myself?  thanks again all!! :)

UPDATE
i found OTT Industries, uhhh i think a lil to much $ right now, and same with buying Calmini front and rear sets... but good idea for the future.  i really want those sami fender flares too... choices.
and found the blaster 2 coil for 48.00.  that doesnt sound to bad.  about 'tweeking', not trying to be picky here but isnt there just a simple alt and bracket i can just buy and drop in?  is anything in this project ganna be simple?  just found that my block was cracked, luckly i have a spare.... what a pain.

Alternators were mentioned here, so instead of making 'nother post... Where does the negative battery cable connect to? (coming from the battery) I'm not having any issues (now anyway) with lights or dead battery. Is it just a ground or what?

well, as noted in are much loved and missed K&N thread,  you sould expect power gains by size, color and brand of decal.  for example, and red MSD decal wouldn't yeild as much power as a bright green DOHC V-TEC decal. and if you can get one big enough to cover the side of your car, you might expect gains of up to 150HP.

Tweek the regulator would be taking
it to a alternator shop and see if they
could turn up the voltage, to say 14.5 V
this will give you brighter lights
