Body Bolt Removal

Any tricks for getting the body mount bolts located under the cowl loose?

Are you talking about the body mount bolts on a sidekick or tracker?

If so, "under the cowl".. are you talking about right behind the bumper and grill?

You will need to remove the bumper, and inner bumper, if you have not already done so. Then, you will also need to remove your grill, and the headlights. Now, there is a bolt head on top, and you should be able to look under now, and see where it comes through the bottom. Just put a socket (you might need a deep one) on top and turn it. The bottom is threaded through a nut that has been welded to the frame.

If it's hard to get loose, let some WD40 sit on it for a little bit, or take a torch to it and heat it up some.

That should work.. My front two mounts were a peice of cake. It was getting the two under the cabin on each side that was hard.

Actually a Samurai - The ones under the door post )Cowl) that seem to be threaded into the body.  We tried vise grips with no luck.

Those should be body studs. IIRC correctly, when I did a 2" body lift on a Sami I had, the front are bolts. Then those center body mounts are studs off the floor. The most rear are also bolts. You'll be pulling the nuts off the center body mounts and pulling the bolts on the most front and rear. Don't forget about the studs near/over the rear axle. 10 points all together.

The problem is the studs don't wish to come loose.  Tried vise grips and was afraid we'd break them off.  Then we would have a problem.   Thought perhaps there was a penetrating oil or a trick to breaking them loose.

The stud is not made to come loose. The nut should come loose. Try some DB blaster or some other penetrant, then add some heat to the nut itself. Then try to add another nut to tighten it against the stock nut. Road salt, rust, etc have 'welded' the nut to the stud. You'll need to 'knock' that crap out. By tightening another nut against the old nut, you can sometimes, break the 'rust weld' on the threads and it shall come loose. If that doesn't work, get a washer up on the nut and hit it hard with a good size hammer. Make sure you protect the stud's threads. A socket against the washer helps do that.

If these studs stay in the body.  How do you extend them for a body lift?

They don't. The studs get a threaded tube nut. I'll take a picture of one tonight as I have Sky's 1" body lift for a Sami on the shelf.

Pics of the threaded tube nut is in the X Tech album. They threaded directly onto the X's middle mount. Don't know the tread count.

From what I remember from someone's interpretation of the language, it's got 2" body lift, 2" suspension lift, cutout wheelwells, 36" tires. Something along the lines of $3500US for it all except tires/wheels.

You know I'm still trying to get an email add. for them  to look in to this.  All I want to know is about the grearing and the fender flares.  I thought they were 33's on that one and that they were working on an xl-7 with 38's
