1995 Suzuki 1.6 16v vs. 1996 Suzuki 1.6 16v
« on: December 15, 2015, 07:39:16 AM »
I just added a new Tracker to the family, Shockwave----a nice purple 1995 Tracker LSI, 2 door, 1.6 16v EFI, 4x4, auto. The previous owner did some nice work on the interior--but added a a questionable 12 volt turbo into the air cleaner and he had the motor rebuilt by a shade-tree mechanic. It ran for less than a month before the engine put a rod through the block---RUINED ENGINE, broken owner, that's where I swooped in!

Now, the question. I have a good running engine--a 1.6 16v Zuki from a 1996 Geo Tracker 2 door, 5 speed, 4x4(rear-ended HARD by a Ford F-250)---This Tracker is gone, I parted it out, but this engine I believe was a OBD II, with air bags, the more modern dash, etc.

Are there any issues swapping a 1996 1.6 16v engine into a 1995 1.6 16v tracker body and chassis? I have the wiring harness, computer, connectors, etc from the 1996 and the blown motor is still in the 1995.

I believe that there is a sensor that is on the oil pump on one and a different spot on the other.  Perhaps FORDEM, or Drone637 will chime in on this.
93 Tracker,XL7 springs & 1" raised spring pads in front with YJ springs in back, home built bumpers rear & front (w/winch), 2" x 4" rock tubes,  ARB front & rear, converted Sami rear to IFS, 33x12.5x15  aluminum rims, roll cage, 2.7L w/5 speed auto.

There is a crank sensor mounted in the front of the oil pan on the OBD2 trackicks.

IMO, the simplest thing to do would be to use the complete block assembly from the 96 and bolt the intake manifold, oil pan (you could keep the 96 oil pan on there...if you do, you just won't hook up anything to the crank sensor), distributor (OBD2s have a combo distributor and coil, where the OBD1s are separate), exhaust manifold (if needed), and any other parts needed (I think the above list covers everything though).

If you want to keep the OBD2 engine complete, then it will require a complete harness swap, since the ECMs are not compatible/interchangable between harnesses.
