Sidekick Sport ABS - hard pedal and no pulse on E stop
« on: November 16, 2015, 03:57:04 PM »
I hit the brakes hard the other morning and had a hard brake pedal with no obvious ABS pulse.  It was just stopping much slower than desired.  I had to swerve around a car that pulled out.  I could have stopped with plenty of room, if the ABS didn't interfere.

Can the ABS be deleted by disabling the controller?  The controller is a separate module under the dash.

The answer to your question is NO, to be done safely, it will require re-plumbing of the system and the installation of an LSPV - with that out of the way - since there was no "ABS pulse", what makes you think the ABS "interfered" (as against "failed")?

Failed to interfere properly - failed.   It has happened a couple of times before.  It is infrequent, but concerning.

I will read up and try to diagnose the problem, but my confidence level with the abs system is not high.  I would prefer to not just replace parts until it goes away.

In that case, wouldn't repair or replacement be the solution?

I'm curious - isn't it illegal to "tamper" with an ABS system, like it is with SRS systems - how would your insurance company react if you were involved in an accident and it was discovered the ABS system had been disabled?  My guess is they would use it as an excuse to disallow your claim, even if you were not at fault & T-boned (just because your ability to brake is not generally an issue if you're T-boned.

And - no - where I am, I'm not required to have either ABS or SRS, so I could legally disable mine - if I had - my car has neither.

I would like to repair it for normal driving.

I am interested in disabling it for off road trips.  It has been an issue when in gravel, snow or downhill in the grass.
