Tire question
« on: November 07, 2012, 11:06:53 AM »
Anyone ever run 2 All Terrains in the back and 2 mud in the front or is there a preffered way?

I just got my 2nd flat in 2 trips - a sidewall flat 1st one was a piece of metal and the 2nd a piece of wood both Driver's rear

The tire shop is hassling me about airing down but the Nexen Mud tires I bought 2 years ago have been the only tire I have ever had this issue with

I'm leaning toward General Tire Grabber A/T2 to replace them

If anyone is thinking of Nexen tires my lopinion is that they are fine when aired up but don't air down as they become sidewall weak

If I were to run 2 different types of tires on a 4x4 vehicle, I would run the more aggressive tread tires on the rear.
How does the tire shop know you are airing down (not that it should make any difference to them)?  I suppose you told them? ::)

To be honest, I don't know if anything would have helped in your case, save for something like a heavy duty, 4ply bias super swamper TSL.

A piece of metal will slice through any tire and a piece of wood sticking up through the ground like a spear will also punch a hole in a sidewall.  Been there, done that.  It almost sounds like you might need to walk the trail prior to driving out on it.

The General AT2 is notorious for weak sidewalls.

Because it is lifted and they know I go off roading they just mention that airing down can cause issues but they know you have to some times

This weekend 4wheel Parts is having their buy 3 get 1 free sale

Anyone use ProComp All Terrains?

I guess I can bite the bullet and pay another $180 for a new tire

Can't find any on Craigs list

Just because it is lifted and they assume you go offroading and they assume you air down, doesn't make it fact.  Even if it is fact, unless they can prove it, they have no right to deny road hazard coverage (I am assuming you have road hazard on the tires, since you posted that they are hassling you about the tires).  I am also assuming that your particular road hazard coverage doesn't cover "offroading".  If it does cover offroading, then they have no right at all to deny road hazard coverage.

I have no experience with the Pro Comp ATs, but I have their MTs on two of my Samurais.  They perform very well on a Samurai offroad, but they are somewhat noisy on the road.  Plus, I'm sure that they do not get as a good mpg as a more street oriented AT. Stilll, they are a good tire IMHO.
