HELP! Fluid in right rear drum
« on: November 01, 2012, 05:44:43 PM »
I finally got the rear drums off... and there is fluid in the right side drum.  The brake cylinder seems in good shape and the brakes are holding preasure.  Is there a differential seal I should check? I couldn't find anything in the service manual.

Yes, there is a seal in the end of the axle tube, on a samurai axle.
Is the fluid gear oil, or brake fluid?  Both have very distintive smells, so it shouldn't be hard to tell.

Either way (Brk fluid or gear oil) you probably need new brake shoes (and the drum will need a really good cleaning).  Since brake shoes come in sets of four you might as well plan a rear "brake job" too (after you eliminate the leak).
