Isuzu diesel in Samurai
« on: October 18, 2012, 07:17:42 AM »
Hey all
My Sammi 1.3 needs redone and I found a good Isuzu 1.8 diesel to put in for a little more money.Mostly will be used for errands and a little bit of dirt roads and just plain fun.I find info on the VW diesel swap but haven't looked in right place yet for Isuzu 4FB1 swap.Anyone have info on oil pan clearance and that stuff please let me know, just getting stuff lined up ahead of time and hope not redo much.  Happy motoring    chitzu

I have seen the Isuzu Diesel/Samurai swap before.  Although, I can't recall the specifics, I do remember it was bulky and *HEAVY*.

IMHO, the VW diesel, due to its smaller size and lower weight, is a better choice for the Samurai.  Plus, there is some aftermarket support for the swap.

35 years of Samurai ownership, and I still have my very first one. :)

4FB1
1.8 L SOHC 8-valve
51 hp
72 ft-lb torque

386lbs (supposedly) fully dressed.  I have found references stating the 1.3L is at 160lb and the 1.6 is around 200.

It apparently fits in a Sammy though:

  :) thanks guys
That is like having double 1.3's, it takes some iron to make 400 psi compression but I hope the smile factor makes up for the trouble and weight.Don't tell anybody but I think these are just big boy toys ,speaking only for myself. I haven't seen the VW out of the car but it must be smaller than the 1.8. that extra weight would not be good for serious offroading I agree.
