how to get grille off of 02 Zr-2
« on: October 09, 2012, 06:04:08 PM »
I was just wondering if someone could give a walkthrough of taking the grille out because i taped off and painted all bumpers and fenders but did not do the grille. it looks quite stupid and would like to paint it asap. thanks.

Take off all the clips and bolts, its wedged in there pretty good,   just got to give it a tug,   I thought I was missing somethings when I tried to take it off a few days ago. Turns out it was just wedged in the front bumper.   there were some stubborn plastic clips I had to pop out from the under side of the bumper, took some time to find.  Also,  If the mud liner in the wheel well is removed, will make your life much easier.
Installed:
- Jeff's 2" coil spacers,  Doestech shocks (21.5-13.5),  free wheelin' hubs, 15"X8" American Racing rims (4"backspacing), 30X9.5 General Grabber AT2's, K&N Filter, Snorkel,  XL-7 Rear springs

Installing:
- 2" BL

You have got to be kidding - is it that complicated to remove the grille on a Tracker?

On an 02 Suzuki there will be 5 plastic clips visible across the top of the grille when you open the hood - lift the center & remove them, there are 5 more friction clips along the bottom edge - you basically pull the bottom straight forwards - the outer ones are at the very end of that strip of plastic under the headlamp, so I would suggest care be used when pulling those free..

In my naivete I would have assumed the Tracker was similar  ???.

No, it isn't especially difficult.  Not a whole lot is difficult to remove/repair on these trucklets although some repairs can be stubborn... if you have some degree/depth of mechanical experience to fall back on when you approach it OR have a tech manual that paints the picture of how it is assembled.  However, for those of us who don't have a depth of mechanical experience or a picture reference sometimes "what holds something on" isn't self evident just looking at it and we don't want to break a piece out of ignorance.  That's why we have this great forum and ask all yoose guys who have "more better" experience here on the forum before we do. The more we do, the more we know and the better the comfort factor.  I'll be the first to say I have been perplexed many times.  Electrical "stuff".  In fact, I'm a bit perplexed with this O2 CEL right now.  When I figure it out, I know will eventually run into something else that will perplex me too.  I'm frequently in a state of "perplexion", I guess.

It's been a couple years, but as I recall, I removed the front plastic bumper wrap by removing the bolts on the inside of the front fender wells and then the bolt and plastic locks from underneath the air cowls.  Then I popped off the grill which was held on by male clips in the body of the grill and three or so plastic locks across the top of the radiator support, under the hood.  I had to take all of the front trim off of Buster when I mounted my brush guard.  Oh, and I painted my grill too while I had it off, although that wasn't the reason for my disassembly.  I'm thinking the bumper wrap has to come off first, because I'm thinking it overlaps the bottom of the grill, but I may be wrong and it may well come off separately.

it's not to difficult by no mean, but if your like me, which it sounds like you are. it alway better to ask some one fisrt that has done it, instead of pulling on a piece of plastic and having it break off in your hand. just take your time remove the top retainer from what i can remember and pull it forward, then you will see how the rest is held on; think it just clips over the lip on the bumper.

I'm thinking the bumper wrap has to come off first, because I'm thinking it overlaps the bottom of the grill, but I may be wrong and it may well come off separately.

On the Vitara/Grand Vitara the grille comes off first - the bumper skin has two bolts in the wheel arches, a couple (maybe three) more underneath and a number of plastic 1/4 turn fastners along the top edge that cannot be reached when the grille is in place.

I've taken my grille off several times (takes less than 5 minutes) - in fact I need to do it soon - the sidelamp on the driver's side needs a new bulb and you have to remove the grille and then the headlamp to change it.

Grill first...?  That's probably WHY I took my grill off then, because I HAD to get my bumper skin off.

Did you see any deer?  Me and my buddy went for moose with calf tags and he ended up watching a moose for a while well within range but he just couldn't decide if it was a calf or a yearling so he let it walk...still great to be out hunting again ;D

Anyways, my bumper just fell off one day when I got back from camping, as soon as I took off the rope holding the bow of the canoe to the front tow point, the bumper hit the ground lol!  And it's been off ever since.

Wow. that was much easier than expected. Knowing of the bottom push in pins was a major help. Cracked the grille in the corner near the driver side pin but fixed real easy.  Took the chromed plastic center section off. Chevy badge had water under it and fell off as i was cutting the tape around it to tape it off. I painted it black. Much happier with how it looks now.
