Front left hub leak-1987 Susuki Samurai
« on: October 08, 2012, 10:21:40 AM »
Hey guys, was four wheeling this weekend and a new leak started. Need help to see if this is a easy common one. Its dripping off the front left bottom kingpin bolts(there are 4). It looks like its coming out of the area right above that. Could this be the gear oil coming out of the hub seal? The seal in question is this one stated in the manual;

Remove 8 oil seal cover securing bolts. From
steering knuckle, take off felt pad, oil seal and
seal retainer.

What do you think?

My guess is the inner axle seal is leaking inside the knuckle.  The fluid is actually from the front differential, the seal leaks and then the 90w gets into the grease in the hub then finds its way out the hub or lower king pin mounts.  The wiper seals are ment to wiper the inner grease away and keep it inside the knuckle but not ment for 90w oil.  I have purchased the kit from trail-gear many times.  It even comes with new axle bearings and nuts.

Thanks! Do you think I would be safe in just buying the inner axle seals? I'm having a locker installed soon and could just have them do the inner seals then.

If I were you, I'd wait till I was ready to install lockers.  To install locks everything would have to come apart twice.  Might as well save yourself the time and money and complete it all at once.  Just make sure you don't go to long and run out of oil in the diff.  Everything in the knuckles should be ok since they have some sort of lubrication going on from the 90w.
