Headlight Wiring 87 Samauri
« on: September 29, 2012, 05:15:44 PM »
Hello....
I am new and this is my first post!

I have an 87 Suzuki Samurai and my headlights don't come on.  A few weeks ago they went off while driving..turned the switch off and then back on...stayed on.  I use my Sammy to get to work...and need a very quick fix to get to work in the dark until I have time to troubleshoot the problem.  Assuming the bulbs are good how can I direct wire them to the battery (maybe with fuse) to get to work in the dark.  Sammy is all stock.  Headlights are 3 pronged, one on top and 2 underneath.  For the moment I am not concerned with a switch or even high beams...just need to get to work.

In other words...which is my positive lead, which for high beam.....

If anyone can help...it would be much appreciated!

If I can remember correctly there are two fuse's for the head lights, one for each side, the head lights are hot all the time and the switch grounds the lights to make them turn on.

Yup - your memory is good.

Mountain dweller - look at BOTH lights - you will see that two of the three wires have the same color on both lights - pick one of those and ground it, the light will come on - one is high beam, the other is low.

Thanks for all your help!  Schematic is a big plus.  I think I will just wire a separate circuit for the headlamps.   I think I have a short somewhere.  This seems like a good active board with plenty of knowledgeable people.   140,000 miles and all stock on my Sammy....I live off a rough dirt road and drive it to work 5 days a week.  I needs a lot of work (like a rebuilt engine) but plan on keeping ahead of it.

Chasing shorts can be a challenge but it's actually really simple.  I take another headlight, install some leads off the terminals and then remove the fuse that keeps blowing.  Take the two wires and install into the fuse location (in series), if you have a short the light will be "on"  go around disconnecting connections on the circuit until the light goes out.  Using this method, makes the light take the load and will not melt or smoke wires.  When your light goes out, you know you have located the short on that section of the circuit.  It sure beats a hand full of fuses!  Always start with the simple connections first, ones that don't take much effort to get to.
