Yes,I see your point.Guess my issue was the damn trailer is NOT a "deck-over",I consider it a low-boy because the deck sits a bit lower than the tires BUT that damn car has a low long plastic facia so I have to jack the front of the trailer UP and ADD boards to my short ramps,so that winch had to pull up steep ramps and UP-HILL!I am going with a heavier winch for the Samurai, its all good.

LOL... I understand... I used a 3500 winch on my old car hauler and abused the crap outta it...

But nothing like the 4wd vehicles that were buried to the frame rails in God Forsaken holes that I had to almost swim thru to get to the truck and then had to feel my way thru to find a winch point.

In the world of off roading 1 constant variable is never say never because it will happen. A person can say I"I will NEVER do that..." But , just like a Psychologist friend of mine says in rebuttal.... "We don't know that..." and he is Always rite...  ;)

Correct, because the line is going out to the location then doubling back to your winch point by use of a snatch block.  So you are actually covering the same amount of distance with twice the amount of cable.

That's actually an interesting question ...

If the line speed is constant, then yes, double line will take twice as long to cover the same distance - but - many winches will pull faster with a reduced load - here's the line speed specs for a Warn Tabor 8K ...

     0 lbs - 29.0 ft/min
2000 lbs - 14.2 ft/min
4000 lbs -  9.9 ft/min
6000 lbs -  7.3 ft/min
8000 lbs -  4.8 ft/min

For the sake of discussion - an 8000 lb single line pull will be 4.8 ft/min, an 8000 lb double line pull will be 4000 lb or 9.9 ft/min divided by 2 or 4.45 ft/min, a 4000 lb single line pull would be 9.9 ft/min, the same 4000 lb with double line is 2000 lbs, so 14.2 ft/min divided by 2 or 7.1 ft/min, so whilst it's slower, is it that much slower?

I just bought the SmittyBilt 8K for mine. It was $350 with a lifetime warranty (caught it on sale). Have used it several times and love it. Always better to go bigger. Whats the use in having a winch if youve got to hope it will get you out of a bad spot?

I do not have a winch on my sidekick and have gotten stuck a few times, but have gotten out rather easily,,,,with a come-along.

Sure it takes a bit of manpower to use, but is cheaper, lighter to lug around and VERY versatile. I have seen them work in locations and instances where a vehicle mounted winch is beyond useless, LOL

And in a group setting having a come-along in addition to electric winchs really opens up recovery possibilities.

Lol - I do have a come-along, which I have used a couple of times, but never to retrieve my vehicle.

This is the one I have, 4 ton/8000lbs, along with a 3' piece of pipe as a handle extension, best of all it costs 50$, better than having nothing at all! LOL http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200511810_200511810

Love the come-along,I would use it.Only issue with a come-along is they give you (maybe) 8 feet of cable. But I usually am at a local hole with several trucks that have straps,I very rarely go off alone where I could get buried.I am still gettin a winch though!

E-bay has a 9000 lb. Vortex winch with free shipping for $299.00. The 8000 lb. for $279.00...  I have heard they are good winches.  I am planning to buy one in the next day or so.

Consider the weight over front end. (replace steel cable helps). I cut into sub. frame to move mine back. Also i agree with the 9000lb. due to the pulling power is affected buy each roll of the cable. For example, the 1st is reel of cable on the winch is not the same as the second, and so on. Sure you can add a pully to increase pulling power but then you have less cable to reach with. And yes you can bring more cable/pull straps. Just know what your getting into. I paid 325.00 for mine at Harbor.
