installed sloppy shifter kit, still no luck
« on: September 18, 2012, 06:02:46 PM »
it sure made a world of difference in the way it feels when i shift gears in both the tranny and t-case, but i still have no access to 5th or reverse. don't really care about 5th but i find myself needing reverse from time to time. everything feels tight and right, but it feels like a 4 speed tranny. like theres not a slot to move over to the right any more. any suggestions? just need a new tranny?

rode around some this weekend, nothing harsh, just checking game cameras and whatnot saturday evening. sunday morning i went to put all my cards back in the cameras, i had no clutch. it still feels the same to mash the peddle, its just not letting me put her in gear. very very green at all this sammy mechanic-ing stuff. hence the "dumb" questions and situations. thanks for all hep

No body knows about this subject? Is there a link to where this has been discussed already?

Can you put it into gear, 5th and R when the engine is not running?

(before I had my clutch issue) I can run 1st thru 4th running or not. It feels like 5th and R do not exist. I read on here about the clutch issue and I believe it may be that the new bushing has gotten out of whack not allowing it to go into gear. I can still run thru 1-4 with the engine off but when I crank it, it won't go in gear

Check the clutch pedal is producing the proper throw, they can and do bend/break.

I had a cable housing that got damaged but you couldn't see it with a casual looksee. Push in the clutch and housing would buckle, effectively shortening the housing and not allowing clutch release.

do these clutches work off of cable alone or is there a slave cylinder like a jeep?

also, still trying to figure out whats up with having no 5th and reverse. i can't even get the stick over to them to see if they grind or anything. when i installed the shifter kit, i saw that there were 4 more bolts below the shifter hold down plate that would maybe let you see down to the shifting linkage but i wanted to ask/research a little before i go pulling stuff apart

Let's clarify something here - namely - is this a shifter issue - or - is this a clutch issue?

Look at talonsracer's question - can you select 5th & R when the engine is not running - if the answer to that is yes, focus on the clutch, if the answer to that is no, then you have a shifter problem, in addition to a possible clutch problem.

If I were to guess, not selecting 5th & R, is pointing to a shift problem - something is preventing the shifter from moving across the gate - I don't know what the sloppy shifter kit contains - but there may be either a broken (or incorrectly sized) locator bolt or even the tip of the bolt (or some foreign object) down in the shift case.

I tend to agree with Fordem...

If the tip of the bolt broke off then it has to be retrieved. When I did mine just as soon as I lifted up the shifter tower I heard the bolt tip fall. I was lucky and removed mine with a magnetic pen.

If you can't find the tip then you need to drain the tranny. If the bolt tip doesn't come out then you may have to flush it out by pouring fluid down through the top of the shifter housing to remove it. This might take several attempts.

While your there you should be able to manually move the gears with a screwdriver however would not do this until I was sure the bolt tip was out or as a final attempt.

this is a shift issue in addition to (now) the clutch. the sloppy shift kit contains the shift bushing that installs at the ball end of the shifter, and new shift bolt and the wave washer. and i replaced all three. the shifter bolt was not broke when i took it out, it looked fine, i just replaced it because i had a brand new one in hand.

i can not reach 5th gear or reverse at any time. not when its running, not while driving, and not when the engine is off. not when the clutch is engaged and not when its disengaged. like you said, something is not allowing the shifter to move across the gate to get to them. what do i look at/for at this point?

If it cant go over to 5th gear then go ahead and remove the shifter again and see if there is anything else sitting in there with the shifter ball jamming it up, it would something on the drivers side of the shifter housing.

Not being to access some gears, while not being able to access others is not a clutch issue.
I would say there is something up with the springs in the side of the shift tower.  The springs are what make the shifter "pop" back to the center position, when you let go of the shifter in the neutral position.  If one of these springs is bound up or out of place, or the pin that fits in the springs and rides against the side of the shifter is bound up or out of place, then that would make it so you couldn't move the shifter in one direction or the other.  I would pull the shifter back out and push against the springs and make sure they are not bound up.  They are pretty stiff springs, so it may be hard to push them, just using your fingers.
And just to make sure, you did put the shift sheet on the top side of the shifter ball (you had to remove the shift knob, to install it), right?  The order of install on the tranny shifter is...shift sheet, wavy washer, top plate (with 3 bolts).  The tcase shifter sheet goes on top of the shifter ball.  The tcase shift sheet goes on the bottom of the shifter ball.  There is also a notch on the tranny shift sheet that lines up with the shifter bolt in the back of the tower....make sure it is lined up correctly.

thanks for this, thats exactly what i found this weekend when i went home. and that was the problem, the spring on the left side was bound up, not letting me get to 5th and reverse. a little cleaning and working it, all fixed and we are happy to back up now. its quite handy.

and yes i installed the sheets correctly per instructions from low range which match yours.

got it done early with some time to kill so i put strobe lights all over it! thanks for the help guys!
