Thoughts on Tires for stock rims

215 or 235 75 15 rim size. Looking at the BF goodrich all terrain ko or the General Grabbers for a all terrain tire. Anyone have other opinions or have used either of these two, share your thoughts

My first tracker (the cow) tires were the first improvement . I put 235 75 15 in the stick wheels. They it but they looked like they were stuffed n the wheels . Iso I picked up a set of 15x7 white spokes and the tire fit good but due to he increased offset and width the ires rubbed . I got a set of grand vitara springs installed them with a few tweaks the tracker was gtg

I would do it again but I think I'll look for a set of f150 factory alloys , lighter and hopefully a better fit too

I've had the BFG AT K/Os.  Good tires, wear very well and roll very well.  The 3-ply side wall is a plus.  I opted to trade mine off because they didn't provide much traction (IMHO) in very light mud and so I picked up a set of Mastercraft Courser C/Ts, which I like better than any tire I have owned to date.  I would describe the C/Ts as an in-between tire of an AT and a MT.  They roll great, wear great, their lugs are siped and they do well on wet roads, puddles, and the mud that gave my BFGs grief.  I'm waiting to see how they do in the snow.   I didn't care for the Courser AT IIs, but the C/Ts are a great tire.

Size wise, 235s will fit under the fenders on stock (5.5") rims... so that's the size I would recommend.

All of the above is contingent upon what YOU want and what you use your truck for.  After that... it's personal preference.

I have the General Grabber A/T II's in a 215/75/15 on stock steel rims. With about 15k miles on them, I have no complaints. My Tracker is mainly a daily driver/commuter, so not much off road use. I do know they channel water well, don't make noise, and have a decent ride quality to them. Plus they are a good deal cheaper than the BFG's. They look to be about half worn at this point, so I'll probably get 25-30k miles out of them.
They are noticably heavier than any other 215/75 I've had. Depending on what drivetrain you have, this may be an issue if you want to go to a 235/75. My 4 door 2.0 auto doesn't want bigger than a 215 without a gear reduction. (And I've already got the 4.88's.)  :(

A lot of people like the General Grabbers and I can't see spending extra on BFG's for an AT tire. The BFG's are more aggressive but is that really what you are looking for in an AT? My hunting buddy has a set studded and that is a great setup in winter.

Looked at the Mastercraft C/T tires and really like them but the minimum acceptable rim width is 6 and stockies are 5.5: quote me if im wrong. CT's look BA and look like they would be a good 15 mi to work and hunting on weekends tire

You are correct.  The 235/75/15 C/Ts DO call for a 6" minimum size rims.  I'm here to tell you the 235s WILL mount and roll, wear nicely and safely on the stock Tracker 5.5" rims.

I had some 235/70/15 Michelin LTXs on one of my Trackers mounted on the stock 5.5" rims.  One February with spotty ice and snow hit a slick spot on the interstate at 55MPH... started sliding side ways for about 300 meters BEFORE sliding down into the median where I plowed terrafirma for another 20 meters.  The 70 series stuck like glue to the rims and the truck didn't roll.   70 series are slightly wider through the cross section than the 235s.

There are plenty of guys who have mounted 31/10.5/15 inch tires on stock rims as well.  That's pushing the envelop a little hard, but they work too.

I've ran five different AT type tires on the stock 5.5" rims with no problem.  Thats with well over a hundred thousand miles on them.  I wouldn't hesitate to mount another 235 series tire on a 5.5" rim either.  It is safe with proper inflation and tire maintenance, as with all tires.  In fact, I'm of the mind that if someone ever did roll a good, properly inflated 235/75/15 series tire off a 5.5" rim I suspect it was from another cause such as a collision or a puncture and continuing to drive on the rim.  

The closest I've come to muddin the C/Ts was last weekend when I went dove hunting.   The midwest got hammered with an autumn thunder storm and almost tropical rainfall late Friday nite.  When we arrived in our regular dove hunting spot early Saturday morning... the creek was out of its banks by over a foot.  Our regular area was under water so we pulled back 50 meters and set up shop to hunt there.

I drove all over that area (minus the creek bed of course  = 5-6 feet deep) and the tires pulled great through all of it.  I must also note, the terrain was firm with the water.  There are hundreds of different soil and water mud brews... but Buster rolled through all of this without spinning a tire.  I don't know the BFGs would have done so well.  Can't honestly say without rolling them thru the same terrafirma mud conditions.   I'm still good with the C/Ts  and glad I bought them.  I have found them in package deals on e-bay too.

I took my truck trail riding in the rain with some friends in their jeeps.  They were all sporting 32-35" M/Ts with various lifted suspensions.  I have to say the 29" Courser C/Ts did very well.  I honestly have no complaints on their performance.  The two places I couldn't pass through were four foot deep pockets.  The first had a very sharp exit ledge and I had waaaay too much front overhang so I pushed alot of terra firma with my brush guard before I came to a stop.  The last was similar to the first although not quite as steep.  Again, my front brush guard plowed terra firma.  I was tugged out of both pockets by one of my buds in their Jeep.

I ran 235/75/15 BFG A/Ts for about a year. Did pretty well off-road, certainly better than the Wrangler Radials that came with the vehicle. However, this summer I bought Kumho Road Venter MTs in the same size. They hum a bit, but I've been very happy with their off-road performance thus far.

Don't forget that the stock ZR2 wheels are 15X6 so 235 will fir with no problem and you should be able to get them mounted at any tire shop without issue.

i'm running 31's on stock sammy wheel's with no problem wearing even had them on for a year now, it was my dd until a month ago when i got a 91 diesel golf on the road ;D. 235 will be just fine.

I've got 215/75/15 BFG AT's on stock steel wheels.  They rub a hair on full lock on the frame so I'm sure the 235's would rub a bit more.  My reason for not going larger than the 215 is the effect on power.  Even just going from the stock 205's to the 215's I noticed a difference.  If off road performance is more important then the 235's may be your ticket.  If on road is important, then consider sticking with the 215's if you have a 4 cylinder.

I agree with zuki709, I had no problem fitting 31's either.  This photo is before my winch, before my lift, stock suspension, running 265 75 16's on stock 16" rims!   I had to remove plastics from inner fenders, and hammer fold-over the protruding  pinch weld seam.  Easy mod to run 30's.  I had minimal rubbing only under full turn lock or major flex.    But I did end up suspension-lifting it because I wanted less rubbing and more ground to frame clearance.  However this photos shows 31.5x10.5 265/75/16 E-rated goodyear MT-Rs on my mostly stock vitara.  No sawsall, no fender lips ruined, no sharp edges.  Factory wheel arches and fender lips.  You can do it without being a hack job.  Even 1/4" wheel spacers and GV springs would make this combo nice without rubbing.  Hammering the lip behind the plastics does zero damage and its not even noticable inside the front wheel wells
