NEW Sami - Fuel problems
« on: August 25, 2012, 02:13:46 PM »
Hello everyone. I recently got a 92 Samurai for a hunting rig (hog dogging). It is the fuel injected JL. Upon receiving it I knowingly inherited its fuel problem. Details below

I knew the fuel filter has been plugging up with rust. I pulled the tank, coated the inside with red kote, changed the filter and added new gas. The problem hasnt went away.

-New plugs, wires, alternator, starter, dist. cap.

When idling in neutral it will run fine for 10 seconds then bog almost dying then pick back up. When idling and flooring the gas pedal it revs fine, no bogging or missing. I also hear some rumbling in the cat and it may be blocked but exhaust pressure feels fine. unbolting the exhaust will be my next step but I am pretty sure that is not my problem.

When in gear and driving, it will run fine until around mid rev then it bogs in and out while gaining speed, 2nd gear gets worse and havent had it higher than that.

To me it seems like it may be the fuel pump... almost like it burns it faster than it is supplying it. Before I go to far into it I would like opinions on what else it may be. Please help, and explain it like you are talking to a kid with out all the synonyms and abbreviations. I am your run of the mill redneck . I am a industrial mechanic by trade but i am new to engines. Thanks in advance.

Do you have a check engine light on?  Even if you don't, try plugging in the fuse and checking engine codes.  I have seen a few Samurais with the check engine light pulled because the owner couldn't get it to turn off.

You might have a bad ECM.  Pretty common on your Samurai...

Have you checked fuel pressure? You might have a bad fuel pressure regulator.

You really need to see if there any codes in your computer. Reading any codes will start you in the right direction.

Thanks guys!

Have not checked pressure.
Have not checked codes.

I planned on doing some work to it throughout the week but tropical storm / hurricane Isaac has other plans for me. I will let you know what happens when I pick my wrenches up again.

Out of curiosity, does it have a 1.6l swap on it?
