So, Ive broken my 3rd shifter locating pin and am now looking other options so this dosent happen again. I know that in '90 they fixed the issue with a bigger bolt.

My question is, if I find a new shifter+housing will it bolt on to the 88 trans?

I had the same problem.
So when had it apart last time, I got the bigger bolt, drilled out the housing, tapped it and made the grove bigger in the shifter. One of the best upgrades that I've done.
If you want, I can send you the info (drill size, tap size etc..)
It's cheaper than buying one if you can do it your self.

Yes, all the shifter housings are interchangable.  You can drill and tap your housing for the bigger bolt.
Note, that the slot in the later shifter is wider, to accomodate the larger bolt with the larger tip.  So you will either have to find a later shifter or make the slot in your shifter wider.

What did you use to enlarge the shifter ball grove? Mill. Dremel tool. Other? when I replaced my last bolt I made a spare in the shop and was thinking or sending it out to be TD hardcoated. I didn't really look much at the groove when I had it out to see how hard the ball was to possibly enlarge it.

Hey Tux,

A mill would have been the way BUT... I used a Dremel, a couple of bits (cheap ones) and finished up with a file. It was a rainy day with nothing else better to do!
As for the shift tower, 11/32 drill bit and a 10mm x 1.25 tap
I checked it a couple of months later and all's well.

I like the Dremel tool idea vs the mill. I just wasn't sure how hard the shifter ball was. I have some carbide reamers for the Dremel so I may do that. (On my next rainy Sunday afternoon..)
