Year ID of engine
« on: June 11, 2012, 08:58:42 AM »
I have a samurai with the tracker engine conversion . Iam working on the motor now and need some help getting the year ID on the engine so I can get the proper shop manual.    The engine is a 1.6l ,16v . also it only has the four plug wires. The engine ID number is   G16t144963. Any help would be great. Thought I could fix on my own , but really need shop manual now that I have broken it down. Thanks  SG

According to internet lore (meaning I have read this on the internet), the fourth character in the engine number (t in this case) will give you the year of manufacture using the same date codes as the VIN - so a t translates to 1996.

Based on personal experience - this may be incorrect - two of the engines I have both show b in that location which would suggest they were built in 81 ...

Not only was Suzuki not manufacturing those vehicles in 81, but I know the history of the engines, one came out of a '91 and the other a 93 that I have owned from new.

There are really only 2 variations of 1.6 16V engines.  The engines themselves (block and internals) are the same.  The difference is between some ignition components and some sensors.
The 92-95 engines had a separate coil and distributor.  Of these engines, the 92 and 93 engines didn't have an IAT sensor (it is a sensor located in the top of the airbox lid), nor did they have an EGR temp sensor (a sensor located in the EGR valve).  All 92-95 engines are OBD1.
The 96 and newer engines had the coil built into the distributor and also had a crank sensor in the front of the oil pan.  All 96 and newer engines are OBD2.
So like I said, from a mechanical standpoint, there are really no differences between any year of 1.6 16V engine.  If you can figure out what ignition setup it has (coil part of the distributor, or coil separate from the distributor), then you can get the proper manual for your setup.

Sweet, thanks for the reply. The previous guy also stated 1996 . Thought I knew a little about engines. When I could not find the carb and the pushrods I knew I should get some help. Replacing the cam seal, leaking. Now have to re-time cam and crank. Thanks for the info. Ordering a shop manual now.  SG

I guess you haven't come across the one with wasted spark DIS yet - there are two different versions, one with two coils on the end of the head and leads to the four plugs and the other with coil packs on #2 & #4, with leads to #3 & #1 respectively - I can't comment on the mechanical differences but I'm going to guess that the head & cam might be different

As far as I know, there are none like that in the US.
