1.3 to 1.6 8V questions (lots of em)
« on: March 18, 2012, 11:06:36 AM »
Ok so I've been reading a bunch of old threads and from what I gather going from a 1.3 to the 8V 1.6 is pretty much bolt in as long as you have the conversion kit so is that true?

Also if I found the 1.6 and it didn't have the head would mine bolt up?

I belive it's been said somewhere that the manifolds will exchage so I was wondering if the heads would. Another thing, some people say they had to lift for oil pan clearance some say they didn't, I'm already running 1.5" lift via shackles so do I need to lift it more?

If I am able to run my head on the 1.6 block this means I can stick with my carb and I won't need the electric fuel pump right?

IF all of my assumptions are correct I shouldn't be getting into too much wiring correct? Just a bigger Alternator and Starter?

What years sidekicks/trackers should I look for to get the new motor from?

And one more, the big one, what kind of difference would I see in the power? Speed wise that is

I will answer what I know.  Hopefully someone else will chime in with the rest.  :)

It can, it has been done a few times.  There are some caveats that I can't remember off the top of my head.

No, you will need an electric fuel pump.  The 1.6l does not have a manual fuel pump so something will have be be installed.  But you won't need a high pressure pump, so you can get a generic electric one from your local auto parts store.  On my old SJ I mounted mine in the back where the fuel filter normally sits.

Same starter, since you will be using the adapter plate.

It needs to be an 8valve.  So pre-94 2-doors and 91 or 92 4-doors.

The 8 valve is rated at 85hp compared to the stock 1.3l's 65 hp.  But your going to loose a bit of that dropping to the carb setup.  But even 10 hp is a 15% boost in power.

Ok Drone here's a thought for you, or anyone who wants to chime in. Isn't the manual pump on the 1.3 mounted to the head? So then why can't i use it?

And as for the power, I'm happy with a 15% increase that's at least highway speeds with my set up  ::)

I think I'll just go grab a couple of engines in the morning, a 1.3 and a 1.6 8V and start my FrankenMotor project :)

You can use the 1.3 pump as you're using the 1.3 head.

Well there are some more options available now for the 1.6L 8V engine builders, high compression pistons from leebuilt, decently priced as well. A set of these and a myside might really be entertaining.

Only problem there is cash, I'm thinking keep it stock aside from exhaust, and the Toyota Carb conversion. A fresh engine with more than 65hp is the main goal. And I can get 4cyl motors for $120
