« on: January 15, 2012, 05:34:27 PM »
Hey my 86 carbed sammy is giving me headaches and chest pains from driving it . I do smell a lot of fumes i am going to change out the rusted muffler and it does not have a CAT. CON. I live in Louisiana so we do not have the smog tests to go through just wondering what i could do so i can enjoy riding my sammy

Thanks

I'm surprised nobody has jumped in here yet !!
2 routes, Ok 3 routes you can go,
Buy a OEM rebuilt Hatashi Carb (1),
or get a Webber Replacement Carb made for Sammys (2)
or get a Side Draft kit using a Harley Davidson motor cycle carb (3).
Since you mentioned that you don't have "Sniff Testing" I recommend the latter 2 of the 3 choices.
The Weber is the easiest to do and maybe less Dollars....
The Side Draft is best for extreme angles "Rock Krawling/Possible Tip Overs" and you have to buy a special Intake manifold, too.
The Both will give you more "Zip in Your Do Da" AND GET RID OF ALL THE ECM Vac lines and such,
but your MPG is going to drop to 16-20.
LowRange & Trail Tough both offer these kits. (Supporters of this site)

Fumes coming into the Cab while driving of a sign of a leaky exhaust you need to look at. About the carb Captain ia more ore less right, however I would add 1973 1.3 Toyota Corolla Aisin Carb to the list as it has the same bolt pattern and allows the use of original breather. You will have to pull the cam off the Sammie carb though.

All of the above  are good ansers...
If you can find the YOTA carb your mialage won't suffer as much..
Replace the exhaust from the manifold back . I use a Flow master with 2" pipe from the manifold. Stock (ish) 1300
With a Datsun L-16 carburetor and manage about 25-30 mpg with 31" tires and a 4.61 transfercase... Just me....
Boxcar...

Be real careful with that...

when I was a teenager, circa 1978 a fellow VW nut like myself, was getting headaches all of the time. His doctor ran a battery of test on him that were, for the most part, inconclusive. Then his mom told the Doc about him working on cars ALL of the time, wondered if the oil stench, brake clean, solvent, or any of that could be the cause. He was also a part time pot smoker, he told the doc 'bout that (in '78 some doctors thought that stuff gave you refer maddness haha). The Doc administered a blood test, and the lab found higher than normal levels of CO and lead in his blood (back before unleaded fuel). Turned out one of his heat exchangers, part of an air-cooled VW's exhaust system, was leaking internally. Made worse by the fact that Steve's hotVW had dual carbs set to run rich (since they had no chokes) and was rarely in a good state of tune (we were 17 years old, and lucky our cars even stated in the morning for pete's sake). Every time he used the heater, he was getting low but sustained levels of unburned hydrocarbons into his lungs and bloodstream. Turns out, the human body doesn't like that.
