hard steering fix for tracker
« on: January 15, 2012, 12:27:35 PM »
first i would like to say hello.
i have a 97 tracker that is lifted and spooled in front and rear.i am still running ifs and kinda wanna keep it ifs rather than a sas.its not that i dont have the time or the parts but its kinda a challenge to be the underdog with less money and less power and still kickin it with the big boys most of the time.i am running 33x13.5x15 ltb tires also...

i was wondering if there is a decent way to get my steering a little easier by adding rather than subtracting parts.my though was a way to add hydro assist or if a rack and pinion from a newer tracker would help or atleast head in the right direction.i was gonna do the twin stick but after i had the case apart to put in my rockmonster gears i didnt realize i had to have it apart for the twin stick conversion so i nixed that idea for now. any info will be appreciated.please refrain from ifs negative comments as i heard them all. my rig goes well for what i have into it and i can still drive it on the road legally right now and i would like to keep it that way if i can.thanks

So do you even have power steering now?  If not, adding it will help a little bit.  But running a spool in the front will make steering suck anytime you have the hubs locked in and/or in 4x4.  Put a locker in the front, instead of a spool.

yes i have the factory power steering.when i was not spooled and thru on some lighter wheels and tires it drove and steered like a dream...now with the huge ship anchors(for a ifs tracker) im toting she is a little rough..i had these tires before the spool and it was fair.

I'd say the issue is the spool.  Anytime the hubs are locked in (whether actually in 4x4 or not), both front tires will be fighting each other when trying to turn.  So either lose the spool, or learn to live with it.

i agree its the spool.no doubt about it.im not gonna loose the spool as i only have real issues when we are in the tight curvy trails. it was a cheap option at the time when i put the spool in.i ordered it when i bought my tcase gears and was juggling funds around on other projects as well...i will try the mentioned above mod and see if it helps at all.chances are with low tire pressure and heavy tires it wont.i plan to sas it once my buddy decides what he is doin with his sami because he said i can have his front axle if he goes with sumthing different.after he seen how capable my old sami was and my tracker is i think he will just keep it stock axle wise....thanks for the comments
