1.3l intake manifold gasket
« on: January 02, 2012, 10:55:20 PM »
Ill be replacing the stock intake manifold with another stock manifold on my 86 samurai. I found 2 choices from autozone http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/1986-Suzuki-Samurai/Intake-Manifold-Gasket/_/N-iuqstZaliz2 , a felpro gasket that looks like a standard flat paper type gasket and a victor reinz one that from the picture looks to be maybe a rubber? raised profile gasket. Orielly's has the same gasket style choices but beck arnley instead of the victor reinz.

I was just going to go with the felpro standard gasket with some gasket dressing but after seeing(pictures) the other ones Im wondering if they are a improved or better option over the standard paper type gasket, I assume they would not need any additional sealant or dressing.

Does anyone have an opinions, recommendations or experience with these gasket choices ?

My only advice is CLEAN..... CLEAN..... I mean CLEAN off both the head & intake surfaces.
Permatex makes a spray on "Copper Plate" gasket sealer that I have used with great results.
Also it would not hurt to "Gasket Match" your intake & head ports since you have everything apart.
Just be careful if you haven't worked on aluminum as it grinds easily with a good rasp bit.
and don't make it baby but smooth, a little turbulence keeps the gas suspended in the air flow
and helps vaporize it.
Smooth runners are for High RPM racing apps.
Helping that little 1.3 L breath gives it a little more power.

The victor one is actually metal.  It is a better gasket than the felpro paper one, IMO.

Thanks for the info. Is it metal with raised rubber around the ports ? Is that kind of gasket installed with out additional sealant or dressing ?

The Victor one is only $1-2 more than the felpro but the Beck one from orielly's, that in the picture looks just like the victor one is $10 more than the felpro.

No, it is all metal.  At least it is on the ones I have seen.
They just get installed dry.
The metal gasket is the type that the 1.6 8V uses from the factory.

Ill order the Victor so I can see at least see it, I can always return it. Asking the people that work at these places gets me nowwhere, they all say to use additional sealant.

That metal gasket is the same type as is used on the 1.6s from the factory...and they don't use any type of additional sealant.

Got the Victor gasket today, it is metal. It's raised around the ports on the head side and recessed on intake side. Not sure how that works but I guess I'll just have to trust that it seals. Any special torque sequence?

As long as the manifold surface and the head surface is flat, it will seal fine.
I'd start in the middle and work towards the ends in a criss-cross pattern and in a couple or three steps....kinda like how you do the head bolt sequence.
