thinking about putting a 2008 suzuki reno 2.0 in my samurai
« on: November 22, 2011, 11:28:44 AM »
I was at a wrecking yard last week and there was a 08 reno with 68000 miles smashed in the front end it got me thinking about another motor swap I have a 1.6 16v now . I was wondering if anyone knew if the 2.0 will bolt up to the adapter plate I have now and will the fuel pump I have now work to feed it the 1.6 was put in with a trail tough kit 2 years ago? The motor wiring harness and ecm will cost 850 will have to wire myself and make motor mounts. Looking for some input from all of you out there. If I do it I will do a full write up on it

We installed an Aerio 2.0 into Drone637's Zukiworld Challenge Race Car this spring http://www.zukiworld.com/forum/build-diaries-how-to-diy/project-trouble/105/.  The Reno has 127 hp (which is more than you now have), but the Aerio 2.0 is rated at 155 hp, and both are transverse mounted motors.  For the same amount of work (other than you have found one at a decent price) you can get another 30 hp free, and that would be close to 4 times original hp.  Time to really break things.
You would need to get these from a Tracker/kicker 2.0
  • Oil pan & pump
  • Cooling water outlet
Get a re-drilled 1.6 flywheel (then the adapter may allow it to be bolted to your Sami transmission (until it breaks), or get a 2.0 2wd transmission with flywheel and use them.
  • Fab up motor mounts
  • Find a larger radiator
The newer electronic controlled motor/transmission systems usually throw communication error codes when uncoupled, but the manual transmission models have less communication issues.  You will need at least a complete wiring diagram for the new motor system.  (I believe Hawk now offers a rewire service for these changes.)
93 Tracker,XL7 springs & 1" raised spring pads in front with YJ springs in back, home built bumpers rear & front (w/winch), 2" x 4" rock tubes,  ARB front & rear, converted Sami rear to IFS, 33x12.5x15  aluminum rims, roll cage, 2.7L w/5 speed auto.

I'm not certain what engine is in the Reno, which is essentially a rebadged Daewoo, make sure it's the J20A that you're looking at.

I'm going to look for a areo motor i think i havt been thinking about a three speed  auto for a tran's but i like shifting a newer five speed would have a hydraulic clutch i've heard for putting them in never seen it     the biggest thing right now is raising the funds to start (going very slow )

Switching auto to manual, or just auto to auto isn't just a swap out, unless you do not mind and can run with ECM error codes.  If you have to pass an auto inspection each year, the ECM has to recognize the TCM, or as with a manual the ECM doesn't look for data from a TCM, or it won't pass the inspection.  Not needing an inspection and recognizing that you have an error code so you will not know if another one comes up, makes it easier to swap in the newer motors.
You have to be able to read wiring diagrams, and formulate a plan on how you are going to actually going to blend the two different wiring system together (or find someone who can).
Always get all the wiring that you can get, it is easier to dispose of it than get just a few more feet/colors.  Some are rewiring their vehicles to match the newer ECM, TCM, BCM systems, and others are blending what needs to be connected.  Trail Tough will convert some of the newer motors to make it almost a plug & play installation.

Increasing your HP dramatically will make it easier to run bigger tires, go faster, BREAK THINGS EASIER, and generally requires a little more diligence in what you are doing ALWAYS.

How about swapping the complete powertrain from a 2.0 Tracker - that way you'll get the 2.0 DOHC engine along with the transmisson, transfercase, ECU etc.

That would certainly satisfy the computers, and it would be a lot easier.  The 2.0 Trackers/Vitaras are 127 hp, whereas the Aerio 2.0 is 155 hp.  The intake is larger, and they have a steel header going down into a pre-cat, and a lot more complications and details to the install.  How much work is 28 hp worth?  And do you need 155 hp in a Sami?

Man, if that's all the horse power difference there is in a 2.0 vs a 1.6 16V I'm glad I went with the turbo.

Swapping motors just like installing turbo' s, you have to research whether it is worth it to you.  I am sure you made some builds that weren't worth the investment in money, but made you much smarter.
If you go with the Aerio 2.0, 155 hp is NOT BAD for NA and you don't have to learn how to drive them.  When maxed out, they don't produce any more.  You have learned how much more to safely coax out of your turbo's.
I am glad you went with turbo's, cause you have been very generous with what you have learned.

a turbo could be fun the motor swap got canceled  (wife wants to put money towards x-mas and the baby due in February ) so a rebuild on my 16v it is  low completion and turbo or high compression  ??? what to do what to do ???

yea that's a helluva lot more important (the child anyway, Christmas shouldn't be about spending money). once the kids start plan on doing that engine swap in 10-20 years.  :)

Someone posted a link for a simple log style manifold that has the correct exhaust flange for our 16V engine, it's in here somewhere. If you take your time and planned everything carefully you could do it pretty reasonably. The manifold and turbo are the biggest expense.
BRDhunter, In all honesty, I'd rather have the torque of a bigger displacement engine than the boost of the turbo. It doesn't really take any different driving style as the boost comes on at such moderate throttle openings, but there's nothing like the bottom end pulling power power of a bigger engine. Like the 5.4 V8 in my Ford PU. with a K+N intake system and Gibson side dump exhaust that thing PULLS. The only way to make a 4 cylinder pulll like that is to supercharge it. Even a turbo will only make power in the top half of the powerband. Now, if there was an easily swapped small LIGHTWEIGHT aluminum V8 around 250 CI that would fit in our rigs, now that would get me excited!

I don't see the Suzuki listed any longer just give them a call. (I didn't realize this company is just a couple hours away from me)
