1.6l swap
« on: November 13, 2011, 08:25:16 PM »
Just got a call from a friend, said he just bought a 2000 sidekick that he is parting out.  Told him I want the 1.6 for my 87 sam.  I plan to rebuild the engine before install (he said it needs a valve job as it sits, but I figure why not just do it right before install).

I know I will need the harness too.  And if I remember right, I need the computer also?

Anything else I need from the donor vehicle?

Also, how do I know if its an 8 or 16 valve?

Any help/links would be appreciated.

I think the 16v head's valve cover says something about 16v. Other wise, the sure fire way is to just take off the valve cover.

You'll need the entire engine, everything that's attached. You cannot use the 1.3 pulleys, alternator, or cam/crank cogs. Although if its an 1.6 8v and you have a header for your 1.3, you could use it.

You'll need the electric fuel pump.

If its a direct port injected (4 injectors) motor than its a 16v.

Yah you'll need the computer and engine control wire harness.

I recommend using the dodge motor mounts.

16v says 16v on the front of the timing belt cover - however - your friend is mistaken or has been misled by the guy he bought that from - the Sidekick was discontinued after the '98 model year - it was replaced by the Vitara, which is a completely different vehicle

Found out its an 89 8 valve.  Burnt valve #2 exhaust.

Going to check out what he has today.  More to come.

GL, I am just about to install an 8v that I rebuilt.  I got the Trail Tough adapter kit but can someone tell me more about the dodge motor mounts?

If I can help you out with any pics let me know and I'll try to snap some as I go along...  the rebuild was pretty easy if you just keep organized and clean.
